WHO WILL SURVIVE?

"I watched as the Lamb broke the sixth seal and there was a great earthquake. The sun became as dark as black cloth and the moon became as red as blood. Then the stars of the sky fell to earth like green figs falling from trees shaken by mighty winds. And the sky was rolled up like a scroll and taken away. And all of the mountains and all of the islands disappeared. Then the kings of the earth, the rulers, the generals, the wealthy people, the people with great power, an every slave and every free person – all hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. And they cried to the mountain and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face the One who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of their wrath has come and who will be able to survive." Revelation 6:12-17

Today’s passage from Revelation 6 conjures up some rather frightening images but ones we need to definitely consider. For we serve an awesome, powerful God and an equally powerful Son, the One who was worthy to remove the seals of the scrolls. Their power and might can and will be leveraged against this evil world as consequence for its turning from the one and only true God…the Maker of heaven and earth and everything on it. It’s this creation power that does not make the assertions of the scripture seem far-fetched.

For if God made the sun, the moon, stars and sky (as He did), then surely He can change the color of the sun and moon, make all the stars from the sky, and roll up the sky like a scroll. Further…if God placed the mountains and islands on the earth, then He surely can make them disappear.

Question: How would you feel if there were a great earthquake and you looked out to see everything taking place as mentioned in our scripture? Do you think it could happen?

I think the biggest problem with our world is that people in general lack a solid respect for God. They want a cushy God who will give them everything they desire while they completely desecrate Him by the way they act. They expect His protection and love while they choose to defile Him by their sinfulness. They fail to acknowledge that God is a God of judgment just as much as He is a God of love. And its that mindset that is going to have them running for cover like the kings, rulers, generals, the wealthy, the enslaved and the free when God’s wrath comes. They too will be shouting out, "…hide us from the face of the One who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of their wrath has come and who will be able to survive?" Indeed, who will be able to survive? Stay tuned for the answer.

In Christ,

Mark
