GOD ORDAINED RELATIONSHIP

"The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man." Genesis 2:18-23

God created man and placed him in the Garden of Eden before setting out to find a suitable companion for him. God determined that it was "not good for a man to be alone" and set out to "make a helper suitable for him". In doing so, God ordained relationship as being critical to the human condition.

Of interest, God first provided companionship for Adam in the form of animals. Our scripture tells us that the beasts of the field, the livestock, and the birds of the air were created and given to Adam for him to name them. In naming them, Adam could relate to them personally and God hoped he might find a partner in one of them. It didn’t come to be. None of the animals were found to be "suitable helpers".

God then went to work to make sure Adam had the right companion and what better way than to have someone he could best relate to…someone who was made much in the way he was. So God placed Adam into a deep sleep to take one of his ribs and create woman…the perfect suitable mate for man. And Adam wasted no time accepting the woman…Eve…the "bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh".

Today, I think we have skewed the true intent of male/female relationships. The world seems to assume that every relationship of this form is somehow sexual in nature to the point that we almost feel uncomfortable being in company with one another. That is truly sad because if we truly went back to the basics of God-ordained relationship, we would see that it all began with man and woman. It’s natural that man and woman partner together. We were meant to associate with one another.

So let’s rejoice and give thanks for what God did from the very beginning…create man and woman to share in the blessing of life together. For this is truly God ordained relationship.

In Christ,

Mark
