~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.”
Luke 2:8-14
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Think about the day Jesus was born. There wasn’t a great crown gathered around the manger, shouting and cheering as the newborn boy emerged from the womb and into the world. There wasn’t anyone standing by to run and spread the news of the birth.
No, there was no one at the manger except for Joseph and Mary, the young couple chosen to parent God’s only Son. No doubt still weary over the long journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, Joseph and Mary celebrated the birth of Jesus alone, the only sounds outside of their expressed joy being the animals who were in the stable with them.
Outside of Bethlehem, it was also quiet, a silent night that found shepherds doing what shepherds do, watching over the flocks of sheep to protect them from straying, theft, or attack by wild animals. It was thankless work, hard work, lonely work but necessary nonetheless. Many of the sheep would be used for sacrifices in the town or elsewhere as God’s people followed the law to seek atonement for their sins.  Given this, you would think the shepherds were somewhat respected members of the Israelite society.
You would be wrong.
Shepherds were largely looked down upon in Israelite society, pushed to the fringes as second class citizens. They would have been the last people anyone would have chosen for any special recognition or selection. But as we find with God, He sees people in a completely different light, often defying worldly societal norms. This would be the case on a quiet, dark night outside of Bethlehem following Jesus’ birth. Look again at Luke’s account of what happened:
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.”  Luke 2:8-14
Imagine being one of those shepherds in the fields nearby Bethlehem. It was business as usual. You are watching over the flocks like you do every single day and nothing is happening out of the ordinary. Put yourself in their shoes for a minute as the night sky suddenly burst into light and came to life, an angel appearing before them surrounded by the Lord’s glory. It would have been enough to first startle and then frighten anyone. We would have been terrified right along with the shepherds had we been there.
What was going to happen? The shepherds, already Israel’s downtrodden outcasts, must have feared the worst. After all, nothing of positive significance had ever happened to them before. Their sheep were their life.
But the angel did not come to judge or condemn them. Rather, the angel came to deliver the following good news after assuring the shepherds that they had no reason to be afraid:
“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
The long awaited Messiah had come! This Savior of God’s people had been foretold for ages by the prophets and those predictions had now come true! Indeed, these words of great joy to the shepherds, who like the virgin Mary before had to be wondering why God would choose to bring this message to them. Salvation’s announcement did not come to any king or governor or any other ruler. It didn’t come by way of a prophet, chosen by God to spread the message to others. No, this honor was bestowed upon the lowly shepherds who were told the Messiah could be found wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger in Bethlehem, the town of David.
That alone would have been enough, right?
I mean, it was an amazing happening and would have been plenty for these shepherds who had never experiences a fraction of what they just saw. But God wasn’t finished yet on that glorious night. Salvation’s announcement had a second act:
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.”
The angel that proclaimed the Savior’s coming was suddenly joined by a multitude of angels. We don’t know how many but it had to be an incredible sight as the company of the heavenly host raised their voices in praise to God giving Him all the glory while proclaiming peace on earth to those who had His favor. And the “those” they spoke of definitely included the shepherds who were eye and ear witnesses to one of the most remarkable events in biblical history.
Salvation’s announcement had come in a big way and it would lead to the shepherds going to Bethlehem to seek, find, and be amazed at seeing the Messiah of the world first hand. We’ll pick up there tomorrow.
PS: Of interest, during the classic Christmas hymn, Angels We Have Heard On High, we sing the words, “Gloria In Excelsis Deo”. These words are Latin which simply mean “Glory to God in the Highest”, echoing the words proclaimed by the company of the heavenly host. Next time you sing the hymn, picture yourself in their presence, glorifying and exclaiming God’s glory for sending His Son to save.
Amen
In Christ,
Mark
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped Him in bands of cloth, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.

Luke 2:6-7 (NRSV), Matthew 1:25 (NIV)

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

It had been a long, arduous journey covering many, many miles over a period of days. It would have been difficult for nearly anyone but especially hard for a woman who was near time to give birth.

But Joseph and Mary made it safely to Bethlehem, the town of David, in order to register in a census ordered by then Roman ruler Caesar Augustus. Their arrival fulfilled at least part of the prophecy of old concerning the Messiah, the part that placed the event in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2).

Tired and weary from their travel, the young couple looked for a place to rest. For days they had slept huddled together under the stars, trying to keep warm from the chill of night. They looked forward to a nice warm room in the town inn, a secure place just in case Mary had to deliver her child in Bethlehem.

There was only one problem.

The inn was full. There was no room for Joseph and Mary. No room for the coming of the Savior of the world.

Desperate for any shelter, Joseph and Mary accepted the offer of a nearby stable, spending the night amidst the animals within. And during that evening, Mary gave birth to her firstborn son. She swaddled Him in bands of cloth and laid Him to rest in a manger. Joseph gave Him the name Jesus.

The Messiah, the King of kings and Lord of lords, the Savior of the world had come, brought into the world without fanfare. No one in Bethlehem was present to celebrate with Joseph and Mary. They treasured their son alone, God’s only Son entrusted to their care.

In fulfilling the prophecies of old, Jesus came in humble surroundings and humility would define His life and ministry when He grew older. And although there was no room for him in Bethlehem’s inn, He has occupied the hearts, minds, and souls of all who would invite Him ever since.

As we celebrate His coming this day, have you allowed God to give you the greatest gift He has ever granted to the world? Have you accepted Jesus into your life and received the promise of eternal life He brings?

For every day is all about Christ, Jesus Christ who was born to save us all in a lowly Bethlehem stable.

Rejoice in Him and celebrate today.

Have a blessed day!

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

SALVATION'S COMING SET IN MOTION

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register.
So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.
Luke 2:1-5
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
As we have seen in the stories of Mary and Joseph, the Lord was working through the angel Gabriel to set the stage for the birth of Jesus, the coming of the Savior of the world. Today, we see God’s plan set in motion.
You’ll recall that Joseph and Mary lived in Nazareth and because of the census ordered by Caesar Augustus, an order that required people to return to their own town, Joseph needed to travel to Bethlehem, also known as the town of David, because he “belonged to the house and line of David”. The scriptures tell us that he didn’t travel alone for he took his pledged wife-to-be Mary along even though she was “expecting a child”.
All that sounds easy, right? Just go to Bethlehem and register.
There was only one problem. Bethlehem was about seventy miles from Nazareth as the crow flies but it’s believed that Joseph and Mary took the easiest path possible to get from point-to-point because of her being late in the pregnancy, a path that would have seen them walk nearly 90 miles.
Think about that for a moment.
When was the last time, if ever, that you tried to walk 90 miles? Not drive 90 miles. Walk it.
We can’t allow ourselves to lose sight of the magnitude of the journey the soon-to-be parents of Jesus made to get to the place where the prophets foretold the Messiah being born. Consider these words or the prophet Micah:
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for Me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Micah 5:2
Caesar Augustus may have given an order that set salvation’s coming in motion but let us never forget that it was all a part of God’s overall plan to bring His Son into the world, a fulfillment of the words His Old Testament messengers shared with the Israelites.
Back to the journey for a moment because it wasn’t an easy trip for Joseph and Mary. They didn’t load up a car and drive to Bethlehem. They set out on foot and the best estimates are that the couple traveled around 10 miles a day, all that Mary could have handled given her being in the final month of pregnancy. This would have made the trip around nine days, nine days that would have taken them over all kinds of terrain, nine days that would have seen them trying to keep warm by huddling close in the cold of night, nine days where they could have faced all sorts of hazards like wild attacking animals or enterprising bandits, waiting to steal from anyone they could take advantage of.
That Joseph and Mary made it to Bethlehem unscathed and without incident was a miracle enough in its own right but God would not allow anything to interfere with His divine desire to bring His Son into the world to save mankind.
As we prepare to once again revel and rejoice in the birth story of Jesus, let’s give thanks to God for how He blessed Joseph and Mary through an arduous but successful trip to set the stage for Jesus’ birth in the little town of Bethlehem.
Tomorrow, we’ll celebrate the day when salvation was born.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son.
Matthew 1:24-25a
This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
We have watched Joseph transition through two phases as he tried to manage the difficult situation that presented itself. Mary, the woman he was engaged to (which in Jewish culture was akin to already being married), was pregnant and he knows he had nothing to do with it. He was a man who the scriptures say was faithful and obedient to the law and with that, Joseph saw that he only had two options available to resolve the quandary he faced. He could either have Mary publicly scorned, embarrassed, and stoned to death or he could simply choose to give her a certificate of divorce and send her away. Given that he wished Mary no harm but desired to stay true to the law, he decided to take the latter approach but before he had a chance to do so, the Lord sent an angel to him with a third option, a proposition for Joseph to consider, a proposal to ensure that God’s plan would happen just as He wanted.
What was the proposition?
Joseph was to go on with business as usual and take Mary to be his wife because she had not conceived by any man, thus preserving her virginity which was so sacred for the law to be upheld and for the prophecies of old, especially Isaiah’s (Isaiah 7:14), to be validated. The angel informed Joseph that Mary had been impregnated supernaturally through the Holy Spirit and when their son was born, they were to give Him the name Jesus because He was coming to save the people from their sins.
So Joseph was given the proposition. How would he reach resolution of the quandary he faced?
The answer is simple and a no brainer. All Joseph had to do was to carry out what God told him to do.
Sometimes we can be our own worst enemies when we are facing trials in life. Like Joseph, we think we can weigh every option available and analytically work our way through to the proper solutions. But the truth of the matter is that in our humanity, we are greatly limited in the way we can process matters and find our ways to the right outcomes. This is why we should just consult the Lord and allow Him to lead us to what He wants us to do because when we do that, and only when we do that, our results will be perfect because His plans are always perfect.
Well, Joseph did listen to God and carried out His proposition. Scriptures tell us that he woke up and did what the angel told him to do, taking Mary as his wife but not consummating their marriage until Mary gave birth to Jesus. This was to ensure that Mary would remain a virgin when she gave birth, again, to fulfill the prophecies.
God’s plan would soon come to full fruition and Jesus would come into the world as its Savior as well as its Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). And it happened because Joseph stayed faithful and loyal to the Lord, trusting in His guidance and direction.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
