"And I saw a great white throne and I saw the One who was sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from His presence but they found no place to hide. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done. The sea gave up the dead in it and death and the grave gave up the dead in them. They were all judged according to their deeds. And death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death – the lake of fire. And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire." Revelation 20:11-15
I’m not much of a movie buff but I have watched a few films through the years. Some time ago, a Steve Martin movie titled "The Jerk" followed the journey of a naïve Southern man named Navin Johnson. Living at home until well into adulthood, he finally decides to venture out into the world and lands his first job at a gas station where he is also given a small space to live. One day, the mail comes and Navin excitedly runs to get it. In the mail was a brand new phone book and Navin is filled with absolute excitement because his name is in the white pages. He yells that he "really is somebody" now that his name is in that book.
Today’s scripture also deals with a book that will determine whether we are somebody or not. There is a whole lot more at stake with this book however than the phone book that Navin had.
For the scene in Revelation, Chapter 20, isn’t a gas station but rather heaven. And God is ready to pass His final judgment on the people of His Creation. One by one, they are brought before Him and checked against the Book of Life…"judged according to what they had done…judged according to their deeds." Remember that the bible also says "faith without deeds is dead". (James 2:26). Revelation sees this played out because those who do not have their names in the Book of Life are "thrown into the lake of fire." In other words, lost forever and not a part of God’s new kingdom to come.
Question: Are you really somebody in God’s eyes? Do you personally know Him and His Son Jesus? If so, are you seeking His Will for you…a Will that will drive you to the deeds He wishes for you to do…deeds that will gain you a place in His Book of Life?
As you can read…and the scriptures are absolute truth…your very eternal existence is at stake. When God’s final kingdom is established, it will reign forever along with those He brings along to share it with Him. Will you be there or left behind? Will you be somebody to God? I pray you will be.
In Christ,
Mark
