THE TRUE ALMIGHTY AUTHORITY

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, You still them. You crushed Rahab like one of the slain; with Your strong arm You scattered Your enemies. The heavens are Yours, and Yours also the earth; You founded the world and all that is in it. You created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at Your name. Your arm is endowed with power; Your hand is strong, Your right hand exalted.

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; love and faithfulness go before You. Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim You, who walk in the light of Your presence, Lord. They rejoice in Your name all day long; they celebrate Your righteousness. For You are their glory and strength, and by Your favor You exalt our horn. Indeed, our shield belongs to the Lord, our king to the Holy One of Israel.

Psalm 89:9-18

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

As we look at the world around us, it can be easy to get discouraged sometimes. It seems there is no shortage of conflict between nations that keep things precariously close to disaster. There are wars and threats of war happening all the time as competing authorities in different nations seek to gain superiority over another. Even Israel is involved.

In times like these, I’m grateful for the words written in the 89th Psalm, words that get us refocused on the true almighty Authority, the One over all the nations. Look at this passage:

Our Lord God Almighty owns the heavens and the earth. They belong to Him and no one else. God grants His people the privilege to live and reside on the lands He founded, from the north to the south, the east to the west.

Over these domains, heaven and earth, God rules on the foundations of righteousness and justice with the end result being actions and judgments revealing His love and faithfulness. And He rules in power, constantly displaying His amazing strength which leave all who experience it in awe and wonder. Thus, God becomes exalted by those who are touched by His might and force.

As for those under the rule of the Lord, the true almighty Authority, how will they respond when they learn to acclaim Him and submit to His power?

The scriptures make it clear. They will be blessed.

There is a joy and a sense of peace and contentment that comes with knowing God is in charge and in control. As we walk in the light of His presence and majesty, we can’t help but be drawn into an attitude of praise and worship as we rejoice and give thanks in the name of the Lord. We celebrate His righteousness, not only displayed in His judgments but also the righteousness He imparts on all those who place their faith and trust in Him. Remember what Jesus said as He delivered the Beatitudes? “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled (Matthew 5:6).” When we place our full hope in the Lord and His righteousness, we will find ourselves filled.

Yes, God is the one true almighty Authority over us all. He and He alone is our glory and our strength, our shield and ever present help in times of trouble. We need not fear or worry because He has been, He is, and He will always be in control of the world He made, no matter what.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
