MIGHTY

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

The Lord reigns, He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure. Your throne was established long ago; You are from all eternity.

The seas have lifted up, Lord, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their  pounding waves. Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea — the Lord on high is mighty.

Your statutes, Lord, stand firm; holiness adorns Your house for endless days.

Psalm 93

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Over the course of my 28 and a half years in the Navy, I spent a lot of time at sea. I’ve had the privilege of being underway in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans; the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Red, Black Seas; the North and South Arabian Gulfs; the Gulf of Mexico; the Straits of Gibraltar, Hormuz, and Magellan; and the Suez and Panama Canals. The earth’s surface is mostly covered by water and I have traveled a lot of it.  One thing you learn in a hurry is to respect the power of the seas.

While underway, I have seen seas like glass, tranquil and peaceful with the only disturbance being the bow of the ship cutting through. Conversely, I have seen the sea in its full fury, displaying a power that can take an eight or nine thousand ton warship (small combatant) and toss it to and fro like it’s a toy. The waves in those seas carried so much force that they would break over the bow of the ship and bathe the pilot house (ship’s bridge). Now that’s some strength.

Yet, as potent as those seas were, they pale in comparison to the might of the Lord Most High. We know this through God’s word as found in the 92nd Psalm:

The Lord reigns, He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure. Your throne was established long ago; You are from all eternity.

The seas have lifted up, Lord, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves. Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea — the Lord on high is mighty.

Your statutes, Lord, stand firm; holiness adorns Your house for endless days.

The seas can lift up their voices expressed through waves that thunder and pound anything that dare trod upon them but their potency will never rival the mightiness of the Lord.

For the Lord reigns supreme on His divine throne over all creation. He is the master of all and is robed in majesty. He has been since the dawn of life and He will continue to rule until the day when He chooses this world to be over and He sends Jesus His Son to judge. Truly, holiness adorns our Lord, who is mighty as he enforces His statutes.

It’s only when we fully come into a relationship with the Father, that we really understand the magnitude of His power. And when we enter into the right kind of appreciation, we can proclaim the same words that Moses did as He spoke to God:

“Sovereign Lord, you have begun to show to your servant your greatness and your strong hand. For what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works you do?” Deuteronomy 3:24

Indeed, what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do the deeds and mighty works that we find in the Lord God Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth?

He and He alone is mighty.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
