The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood. Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them.

Hebrews 7:23-25

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Of all the problems in the world, and they are many, there is one that transcends them all and it has through the ages in every single generation of people since the dawn of creation.

What’s the problem?

It’s simply this.

Every single person is a sinner before a God who will condemn every sinner to an eternity in Hell.

Makes everything else seem like child’s play, right?

This is because this issue is one with eternal implications for all. It doesn’t discriminate by nation, state, or community. There’s no exception for race, gender, or age. Political affiliation or socioeconomic status has no bearing on God’s judgment and who it falls on.

Every single person is a sinner and every single person’s soul is destined for everlasting damnation and torment in Hell.

This would be totally depressing if it wasn’t for another absolute truth.

For while God is a God of judgment, He is also a God of mercy, grace, forgiveness, and love, so much so that He wasn’t willing to watch every person suffer eternally in Hell and so He put a plan in place for pardon, a plan that would provide intercession for the sinner and a pathway to eternity in Heaven.

This intercession came through Jesus, God’s one and only Son, who was sent by the Father from Heaven to earth to serve as an atoning sacrifice to pay the sin penalty for anyone who would simply place their belief in Him (John 3:16). John referred to Jesus as the Lamb of God who had come to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29) and Paul later would call Him the Passover Lamb who had been sacrificed (1 Corinthians 5:7), His blood covering anyone who believes in Him so that death would pass them over, just as it did the Israelites in Egypt when the Passover observance originated.

Speaking of Old Testament times, the high priests were intercessors as well but none of their interventions were everlasting. Every year, generation after generation, the high priests would offer up sacrifices on the Day of Atonement, the blood of the sacrifices cleansing the Israelites nation from their sinfulness. As we read in today’s passage, no priest was permanent.

Conversely, Jesus, through His death and resurrection, lives on as the perpetual High Priest and Intercessor for all sinners. It’s been the case since New Testament times and it remains true today. Through Him and Him alone, the one who believes in Him is saved “completely” and guaranteed the opportunity to “come to God” through His Son, the only One who can bring anyone to the Father (John 14:6).

I’ll be concise and blunt in closing.

If you haven’t placed your belief in Jesus, you are going to end up in Hell forever. You have no intercessor to rescue you from this punishment.

If you want to change that sure outcome, believe in Jesus as your Savior right now and receive His intercession that brings pardon with gladness and thanksgiving, an intercession that will make you a child of God and co-heir to the Kingdom of Heaven where you will abide forever (Romans 8:14, 16-17).

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
