The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a High Priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in Heaven, and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

Hebrews 8:1-2

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

We’re in an election year in the United States and every four years these major events have become more and more tenuous and nerve wracking as the constituency, the American people, are faced with choosing their national leader. More and more, it seems like we aren’t getting the best and brightest to govern us but rather are left with options that leave a lot to be desired, so much so that voters tend to have to select between the lesser of two evils.

Before that happens, before the people actually get a chance to carry out their civic duty and responsibility to vote, there’s a steady diet of mudslinging and name calling, a bombardment of political advertisements with one candidate attacking another. Rarely do we find a prospective elected official actually concentrating what they can do to make our country better. Rather, more time and money is spent trying to tell us how we shouldn’t vote for someone else.

Frankly, it’s a travesty and enough to give the healthiest person a serious headache or even an upset stomach.

Thankfully, Christians don’t have to get caught up in all this because we know and acknowledge that there is a greater authority in place under which all mankind falls. For every nation and its respective government as well as its populace are completely subordinate to Jesus Christ, the One who God has placed in power and sovereignty over all things in Heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18).

Further, we read through the Word of God as proclaimed in the ninth chapter of Isaiah that the “government” is on the “shoulders” of Jesus and the “the greatness of His government and peace” will have “no end”. (v.6-7).

With these Old and New Testament assurances as our backdrop, look again at the opening two verses of Hebrews, chapter 8:

Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a High Priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in Heaven, and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

The point here is clear.

Jesus has been sitting on the “throne of Majesty in Heaven” at God’s “right hand” since He ascended more than 2,000 years ago and He will be there, reigning and ruling over all creation until that time when He returns. In His place of divine and ultimate prowess, an Almighty Lord with no equal or rival, He serves us, His people, with caring and compassion while meeting our needs and helping us grow to be more like Him every day. In Him, we have all we could ever hope for and all we ever need.

And so friends, let’s not get wrapped around the axle and so consumed by politics that we are distracted from the Gospel work our Savior has called us to do. Let’s place trust in our blessed Jesus to exercise His authority over the affairs of all nations for He is still on His throne, and as we trust Him, remember this:

No matter who is president, Jesus is King.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
