The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

For this reason Christ is the Mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that He has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

Hebrews 9:15

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

When two sides are at an impasse, you usually will find a mediator brought in to try and resolve the issue.

We see it in sports whenever a player feels they are worth a certain amount of annual salary and the team they play for thinks they are worth less. In these cases, a mediator or arbitrator will enter into the process, review the proposal from each party, and then render a binding decision. In this scenario, one side will get what they want while the other side won’t and the mediator held the power to make it all happen.

Take this illustration and apply it to the spiritual destiny of every single person who has lived since Jesus died, was resurrected back to life, and ascended to Heaven where He sits in all authority over everything in Heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18).

One side of the issue at hand is mankind, every person being a sinner that falls short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23).

On the other side if the Lord God Almighty, the omnipotent Maker and Master of all living things who hates sin and condemns sinners to Hell.

Note here that there is a major problem for mankind because short of having a mediator, all people would be destined for a life of everlasting damnation and torment.

Talk about a depressing truth to carry into every day as we walk through life to the day we die.

Thankfully, God so loved all His created ones that He didn’t wish for them to perish and so He made the way for them to be saved from Hell and guaranteed a place in Heaven when life on earth ended. That way He created was through His Son Jesus, the One who was and is the Way (John 14:6), the way to live and the way to living with God the Father for all eternity.

Given this, Jesus became the great Mediator for us all as proclaimed in our scripture verse from Hebrews, chapter 9:

For this reason Christ is the Mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that He has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. v.15

Go back to the spiritual impasse problem we looked at earlier with God on one side, a hater and supreme judge of sin, and all mankind who were sinners before Him. No person has a chance standing on their own merit and will lose their case against God unless they have believed in Jesus, the One who “set (sinners) free from the sins committed under the first covenant” (that being the commands of God against sinful, wicked living).

Jesus did this redeeming work on Calvary’s cross where He willingly shed His blood and died as the last sin-atoning sacrifice ever needed. Because of this intervention, those who have professed belief in Him as Savior will “receive the promised eternal inheritance (aka Heaven).

This is what makes Christ Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant. He died for all people, whether Jew or not, and therefore anyone can be saved through Him. He steps into the scene when we are hopelessly before God to answer for our sinful ways and tells His Father that He has already paid the sin penalty owed. And with that, we are pardoned, off the hook, liberated from suffering God’s punishment, and bound for the mansion Jesus built for us, a mansion He promised He would come back and take us to.

Friends, what a hope we have in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, our great and loving Mediator. Let’s do whatever we can to tell other about Him today so they too might trade in Hell for a lifetime in Heaven.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
