The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living.

Hebrews 9:16-17

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Here’s one thing that’s a certainty for every single person.

We’re all going to die.

It’s true. As sure as we gain life at birth, we start to move towards a day when that life will end. No one lives in this earthly existence forever. Everyone has an expiration date that is unknown to them.

Because of this sure end to this worldly life and the fact that we tend to amass possessions and assets here on earth, possessions and assets that we can’t take with us at death, most prudent people have a will drawn up. This will is a legal document that expresses the deceased’s desires in regard to disposition of what they have. Real estate, money, and other property of the deceased will be given to the person spelled out in the will.

With this, we know that nothing happens in regard to will execution until the person who made it is dead. That’s when the will is put into force.

But the spiritual inheritance for Christians isn’t like this. It is a special, divine and eternal will, one that won’t be triggered by death but rather by Jesus’ return from Heaven to earth to judge all humanity. And instead of a long list of possessions and who will get what, God keeps the inheritance of His heavenly Kingdom simple. To be one named in His eternal will, all one needs to do is simply believe in His Son Jesus as Savior.

That’s it.

No need to go to a lawyer and sign a document that affirms you are an heir, getting it officially notarized so it’s legal.

All one needs to do is just believe in Jesus.

Jesus, God’s only Son and the Savior of the world, has already gained His place in the Kingdom. He ascended there, forty days after His resurrection from the dead and still sits at the right hand of His power, ruling and reigning over all things in Heaven and on earth with the authority vested in Him by God (Matthew 28:18). When a person believes in Him, they become a co-heir. The scriptures proclaim it.

If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you.

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory. Romans 8:9-11, 14-17

When we place our belief in Jesus, we automatically receive the Holy Spirit and because of this become children of God and further co-heirs to the very Kingdom of God along with Jesus, our Savior.

How awesome is that!

So when Jesus returns, all Christians have nothing to worry about. Their victory is sure and a portion of Heaven is theirs, just as God’s word promises. It’s a different will, one only God could fashion, but the eternal reward that comes with it is the most valuable, precious gift God will ever give us. Out of love, He didn’t desire that we perish but rather live with Him forever and we will get to do just that when we believe in His Son Jesus, the only One through which we can be saved, the only One who can bring us to the God who is our Maker and Master so that we can abide with Him forever.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
