The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.

Ephesians 3:12-13

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

It’s hard to have total confidence in anything in life, right?

I mean, we want so much to have absolute surety but it is an elusive venture for sure, maybe almost impossible from a worldly perspective. It’s hard to find security in anything when life is so unpredictable.

This truth has been well known for the ages and you may have even heard this humorous assertion before:

“The only things that are certain in life are death and taxes.”

I have always had my own quote that you can be free to use as much as you like:

“The only thing certain about life is that it’s uncertain.”

Yes, we all yearn for anything we can be guaranteed, especially when it brings you hope.

Enter Jesus.

God wished to give His people a promise with eternal implications, a promise that would carry with it a trust that won’t ever be violated. Here’s what He gave us through His Son:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

Note here there is only one requirement to gain life everlasting. A person only needs to believe in Jesus and they will be saved (Romans 10:9). Salvation is therefore definite for all Christ disciples. It’s because of this that we find the Apostle Paul writing these words to the church in Ephesus:

In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory. Ephesians 3:12-13

Think about one’s state before accepting Jesus as Savior. They were sinners, destined for an appearance before a God for judgment, a God who despises sin. They were without home and eternal damnation and torment were in their future.

It was the worst possible place anyone could ever be.

But then everything changed with one simple decision. The condemned person accepted Jesus and by doing so were immediately justified or made just-as-if-they-had-never-sinned. Their sins had been purchased and pardoned through Christ’s redeeming work on the cross of Calvary. His blood had washed them clean, whiter than snow.

Suddenly, a God of judgment that anyone would fear coming into the presence of became approachable, approachable with a sense of freedom and confidence within the approacher. The once condemned sinner was condemned no more all because of Jesus, who brings supreme confidence to every person who believes in Him by faith.

Today, and every day, let us give thanks for God’s love as expressed fully through His Son who died to save us.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
