The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“Forget the former things; do not
dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not
perceive it?”
“I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. The wild animals honor Me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to My people, My chosen, the people I formed for Myself that they may proclaim My praise.”
Isaiah 43:18-21
This ends this
reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
I have ministered to countless
people over my years of service to the Lord who had one shared problem.
They couldn’t stop living in the
past.
Maybe you can relate. Maybe you
know someone like this who can never move forward because they always choose to
go backwards instead. One thing is for sure. You can never move into the future
if you keep going to the past. It’s just impossible.
Sometimes people go back to the
past because they are riddled with guilt over something they have done. They
have committed some wrong and can’t forget it even if someone they have wronged
has forgiven them. They find themselves persistently haunted by their past and
indeed, sometimes we fail to forgive ourselves for our past failures.
In other instances, perhaps we have
been hurt by someone, either physically, emotionally, or both. We continue to
go back and remember what has happened in the past and in doing so,
continuously reopen wounds that were once closed. Doing this over and over
again thwarts any healing that has taken place and often, we end up starting
all over again, trying to get over what happened to us but failing to flashback
to the times when we were hurt.
As in all other struggles we
encounter in life, thanks be to God for the powerful guidance contained in His holy
word, a guidance that leads us from sorrow to joy, from despair to
encouragement, and from the dark past into a brighter future. Look at today’s
words from Isaiah 43, words that command us to stop living in the past:
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a
new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
“I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. The wild animals honor Me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to My people, My chosen, the people I formed for Myself that they may proclaim My praise.” Isaiah 43:18-21
The Lord speaks to us powerfully
here and with full authority. He doesn’t say, “I would suggest you forget the
past and not dwell on it.” No, rather He demands that we “forget the former
things” and “do not dwell in the past”. God is telling all of us, “Let it go and
move on! See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive
it?”
When we turn to the Lord, we turn
to the One who can heal us from our past, once and for all. He can do something
for you that no human counselor can do, for through Him, you can find your past
hurts and guilt cast into the sea of forgetfulness as He sets your feet on a
path that is pointed forward into a brighter future. He, and He alone, can
bring you a newness of spirit and heart, liberating you from your past and setting
you free to live in a glorious future with Him as He continues to be your
comfort and peace, the One who will continue to guide you forward toward His glory
and keep you from being dragged backwards into the former pit of despondency
you once found yourself in.
Only God can do this. Allow Him to
in your life and stop living in the past. Today is the day to bury your burdens
and hurt and walk into a new and brighter future with your Lord.
Amen.
In
Christ,
Mark
