The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
This is what the Lord says—your
Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord, your Holy One.”
Isaiah 43:14a,
15
This ends this
reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
The word “holy”.
Look in the dictionary and it will
render the following definition:
a. exalted or worthy of complete
devotion as one perfect in goodness and righteousness.
b. having a divine quality,
heavenly.
c. godly, pious, devout.
d. having a spiritually pure
quality.
e. regarded as deserving special respect
or reverence.
Given this, we look at the first of
a four part devotion series on who God is to us, those who He made and reigns
over. And as you may have guessed, today we focus on God as being the Holy One,
something He professed in our scripture from Isaiah 43:
This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am
the Lord, your Holy One.” vv. 14a, 15
It makes complete sense right, that
the Lord God Almighty might perfectly be associated with the word “holy”
because He created holiness and in fact was the perfect manifestation of it.
There would be no holiness if God had not ordained it and brought it into
being. Thus the author of the heavens, the earth, and everything in them is
holy. He is fully:
1. Exalted and worthy of our
complete devotion because of His perfect goodness and righteousness.
2. Divine and heavenly in His
nature.
3. Pious and devout in the way He,
the only God, watches over His creation and cares for it so intimately.
4. Pure in His Spirit. In Him,
there is no flaw, no error, and no transgression.
5. Worthy of all our respect,
regard, worship, reverence, and praise. No one deserves this from us more than
God.
Yes, God is the Holy One and that
would be awesome enough in its own right but you see God wasn’t satisfied with
confining holiness just to Himself. No, instead He chose to impart some of His
holiness on those who would choose to place their faith, hope, and trust in
Him.
In other words, we all have a
chance to be holy through God the Holy One and, as we will see, are expected to
aspire to be holy. The following scriptures testify to this truth:
But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it
is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1:16
God, the Holy One, expects us to
live in holiness. There is no debating this and just in case we might wonder
how we’re to do this, He tells us that too. For we are to be holy as He is holy
and so the only way we can meet His expectations is to adopt His level of
holiness in our own lives.
So how do we do that exactly?
The first way is to follow the life
and ways of His Son Jesus who came to walk among us, fully man but also fully
God. Jesus was a perfect physical representation of what it takes to be holy
for there was nothing about His that didn’t exude perfect holiness. Live as the
One who said He was the way and the truth and the life, and you will live in
holiness. It’s that simple and if you are a Christian, then you have already
made a commitment to do as Jesus did. After all, at the root of being a
Christian is Christ and Christ alone.
Friends, we serve a God who is holy
and through living as His Son lived, we can meet His expectations to be holy as
He is holy. None of us will ever reach perfection in our striving and that is
good news because that means that we can always become more holy each and every
day. There’s always another level of holiness to achieve.
Commit to the word of God and the
life of Jesus contained within to learn how He lived, allow the Holy Spirit to
lead and guide you through your decisions and choices in life so you will
always be heading in the direction God wants you to go, and you will find
yourself well on your way to living holy and in a way that will always be
pleasing in His sight, the sight of God, the Holy One.
Amen.
In
Christ,
Mark
