The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When He was hung on the cross, He took upon Himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing He promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.

Galatians 3:13-14 NLT

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

All mankind was and is under the curse of sin.

There hasn’t been a single person who has lived a perfectly righteous life and this makes everyone a candidate for God’s eternal judgment.

It’s a very precarious place to be but you couldn’t tell by the way people live today. Millions upon millions of people are unsaved and destined for everlasting damnation and torment when this worldly life ends. They are cursed and without hope unless they receive some miraculous, saving intercession.

Enter Jesus.

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Not wishing for anyone to perish, God sent His only Son Jesus to rescue those who would place their faith in Him. Through Christ’s redeeming work on the cross, simple belief in Him as Savior gains the believer everlasting life. This is a freedom from the curse of sin that results in a life blessed by the Holy Spirit who is received by faith, a Holy Spirit who will always lead a person into the ways of righteousness or right living before God.

Note that this blessing was the same gift God granted to Abraham, the patriarch of the Jewish nation. And because of His Son’s sacrifice, the Lamb of God who took away the sin of the world, God made salvation available to all people and this included the once excluded Gentiles.

Friends, this good news has existed for more than 2,000 years now and millions upon millions of people have been delivered from eternal agony by Jesus who bore their suffering on the cross. As we draw ever closer to Christmas, let us all remember that it all started in a lowly manger in Bethlehem town as God brought heaven to earth and changed the world forever. May we increasingly give thanks to God for the gift of Jesus, His Son.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
