The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“You and I are Jews by birth, not ‘sinners’ like the Gentiles. Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.”

Galatians 2:15-16

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Life is spiritual struggle. I think I am safe in saying this.

I often liken it to an old cartoon I used to watch growing up. In it, a person was at a moral crossroads, a place where they had to choose between right and wrong. While pondering which way to go, a white angel appeared on one shoulder and said, “You know you shouldn’t do this because it’s wrong”. Immediately, a red devil appeared on the opposite shoulder and proclaimed, “Do it! Do it! You know you want to do it!” It made us laugh but there’s more reality in the situation than we want to admit, right?

For as we go through each day, we have God on one hand urging us through His will and Spirit to do right and righteous things. At the same time, Satan is working to get us to do the opposite, to embrace sin and satisfy our desires over the Lord’s. Too often, we allow the devil to have his way and when we do, we find ourselves where we need to get right with God again.

In Old Testament days, the days where the Law dictated right and wrong behavior, sacrifices were the vehicle by which the Israelites returned to good standing with God. An unblemished animal was brought to the altar and was sacrificed as an atonement for sin.

But then God changed everything. Realizing that it was impossible for mankind to completely atone for their transgressions, He sent His only Son Jesus, the perfect unblemished Lamb of God, to take away the sin of the world. This happened on the cross of Calvary where Jesus was crucified while bearing the weight of all sin, the last formal sin atonement that would ever be needed.

From that point on, the only way to get right with the Father was through believing in His Son by faith.

We see Paul accentuating this truth in our verses for today as he continues to write to the churches in Galatia. The Jewish Christians were trying to convince the new Galatian believers that circumcision was a requirement for salvation, like getting circumcised was a component of getting right with God. Obviously, it wasn’t and Paul was working to eliminate the false teaching of the inaccurate Gospel. He made it clear that no one could get right with God through “obeying the law” but rather through faith and belief in Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world.

Do you want to get right with God?

It only happens one way and that is through Jesus, His Son. Believe in Him and you will be right with God for all eternity.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
