The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

To the churches in Galatia:

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Galatians 1:3-5

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

I’ve always been of the mindset that we can’t possibly fully appreciate all that God did for the people of His creation through His Son Jesus unless we totally consider where we stood before it happened. It wasn’t a great place to be.

Before God initiated the new covenant, all people were sinners with no hope of salvation. Eternal damnation and torment was the destiny and no one person possessed the power to completely atone for themselves, no matter how much they repented and repented and repented. This is because forgiven sinners were sure to turn around and sin again in some way.

That was the state of things before Jesus came. It was a place where every single person in the world needed rescued and as we look at Paul’s greeting in the opening verses of Galatians, chapter 1, we find that God was the One who helped make that rescue happen.

God is the Supreme Orchestrator of all things. He is the Maker and Master of the world and everything abiding within it. And He is in control, possessing the power to do whatever He seems fit to ensure his will is carried out.

In the case of salvation, God so loved the world that He didn’t wish for anyone to lose everything and perish so He made the way for any person to gain everything through belief in Jesus, God’s only Son who “gave Himself” to pay the price for our sins and “rescue us” from the “present evil age”.

No one did anything to merit such a rich blessing. Rather, it was extended by God via Jesus through grace with the objective to find peace, a peace that surpasses understanding. It was this grace and peace that we find Paul wishing on the Galatian believers as he opens his letter to them.

Friends, today we continue to live in an evil age and we’re reminded of it every day as we watch the happenings in our community, nation, and world. Thanks be to God that we can still rejoice and be glad in the truth that we are rescued by the Lord Jesus who died for our sins and brought us the opportunity for eternal life.

Today and every day, let us celebrate all that God has done by way of Jesus and give Him all the glory, honor, and praise now and forever more.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
