The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

...listen to my appeals.

2 Corinthians 13:11 GNT

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Paul expected a lot of the Christian churches he planted. He understood that as sure as the Holy Spirit was moving in the midst of believers, so too was Satan whose sole motivation was to dismantle and destroy every good and perfect thing the Lord was trying to do.

And so as we read his epistles in the New Testament, we find him consistently and persistently imploring Christians to listen to his appeals and ensure their conduct was obedient to the scriptures and acceptable to the Lord.

This isn’t something unique to the Apostle Paul in the scriptures. Go back to the Old Testament and look at any of the prophets and you will find them appealing to the Israelites on behalf of the God that called them to be messengers. These prophets didn’t wish to see their brothers and sisters go down the road of sinfulness, angering the God who could and would bring judgment.

And so the prophets pled and pled and pled to the people of Israel, asking for them to listen to the appeals from God and then respond in obedience. Sometimes the Israelites listened but most of the time they chose to reject God’s appeals and do what they wanted to do instead.

We know where that got them, right?

No one should ever invite God’s consequences upon them but the people of Israel seemed to do it over and over and over again.

Today, the Lord still appeals to us, His people, to listen to His appeals. Those appeals are found in His Word and many of them are delivered to believers every Sunday through sermons from pastors within churches all over the world. Our Lord also uses His Holy Spirit to appeal to our hearts and minds with the hope of convicting us toward living the way He desires.

The exhortation today from the Apostle Paul toward the church in Corinth is the same exhortation God gives us daily.

Listen to my appeals.

It’s in our best interest to give heed to this and comply with the demand.

Tomorrow, we’ll look at the third thing Paul called the Corinthians to do.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
