The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?

Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?

Who can fathom the Spirit of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as His counselor?

Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten Him, and who taught Him the right way? Who was it that taught Him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding?

Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; He weighs the islands as though they were fine dust. Lebanon is not sufficient for altar fires, nor its animals enough for burnt offerings. Before Him all the nations are as nothing; they are regarded by Him as worthless and less than nothing.

With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken him?

As for an idol, a metalworker casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it. A person too poor to present such an offering selects wood that will not rot; they look for a skilled worker to set up an idol that will not topple.

Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than he blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

“To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. “Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.”

Isaiah 40:12-26

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

If someone asked you to compare the Lord God Almighty to something, what would your answer be? Would there be any possible connection you could make to anything a man or woman would know that could even come close to giving them some concept of the Lord?

If your answer is no, then you are right because the Lord God Almighty that made the heavens, earth, and everything existing in either, is incomparable. We know this because of our scripture passage today as we continue to study from Isaiah, Chapter 40. Here are the verses of focus today:

Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.”  Isaiah 40:12-26

From this passage, we see the Lord telling us Himself that any attempt to compare Him with anything is a fruitless endeavor, a total waste of time. Doesn’t he ask us:

“To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?”

We are left with no other response except, “No one or nothing Lord. You are incomparable to anything we know.”

It’s easy for us to say this because we know of no one who has done any of the following:

- Measured the waters in the hollow of his hand.
- Marked off the heavens with the breadth of his hand.
- Held the dust of the earth in a basket.
- Weighed the islands or the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance.
- Fully fathomed and understood the depth of the Holy Spirit.
- Was consulted by the Lord for enlightenment and as a result, instructed Him to show the path to understanding or counseled Him in the right way to live.
- Sat on a throne above the earth.
- Stretched out the skies like a canopy or tent to live in.
- Brought rulers to defeat with a simple breath.
- Brings out the starry host one by one and calls them by name, ensuring none are missing.

Again, the Lord asks us, “With whom, then, will you compare God? To what image will you liken him?”

The answer remains, “No one or nothing, Lord. For You are incomparable.”

Friends, we need to be reminded that we were created by a God that is so infinitely powerful that there is nothing beyond the work of His hands. Such is His stature and prominence that there is no one who rivals Him. No one.

And yet, we doubt when we come up against challenges in life and fail to believe that God can handle them. In fact, we often think that someone else or even we ourselves are more capable to work things out, completely ignoring the only One who can truly help us through.

Look again at the list above, a list found in just a few verses. The Bible is certainly full of plenty of other excerpts that illustrate the incomparable nature of God. Why would we choose to trust anyone or anything else except Him? There’s little wonder why we find this set of questions embedded in our passage today:

Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

God is asking us these things. When are we going to wake up and trust Him, the incomparable Maker and Creator of all things, the Master and Ruler over all creation, with everything in our lives?

Today, let’s all make a renewed commitment to do just that.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
