The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Do you not know? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Isaiah 40:28a-31

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Have you ever found yourself simply exhausted and wondering if you’re going to make it through any one day or week or month or year?

Life has a way of draining our energy and sapping our strength.

Maybe it’s someone who ends up working countless hours in their job or even working two or more jobs just to be able to make ends meet. You labor and labor and labor, seemingly always in a state of perpetual tiredness. I remember many days like that when I was in the Navy and doing what it took to meet the mission I was tasked to carry out. It definitely was far from a “nine to five” job. Maybe you can relate.

Maybe you’re a student trying to earn a college degree. It seems like there’s no end to the amount of class work you need to finish. And when you do meet the week’s requirement for one class, you still have several others that place their own demands on your time. You read and read and read and write and write and write until you can’t stay awake anymore. It can be exhausting to say the least.

And then there are the fathers and mothers out there who are home raising children, children who have motors that don’t stop and run wide open, challenging us to try and keep up with them. They place a constant demand signal on their care providers and the only break seems to come when they choose to nap, recharging their little batteries to go at it again. That leaves little time for the adults to catch their breath and by the end of the day, they are typically spent.

Indeed, there are any number of scenarios we could go through that might serve to leave us spiritually and physically weary with our strength meters on empty. Maybe you are there today as you read this. Thanks be to God that as in every other matter we go through in life, He offers us encouragement in the midst of our life challenges. The matter of being worn out is no different. Look again at the final verses from Isaiah, Chapter 40:

Do you not know? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.  Isaiah 40:28a-31

We can say that we’re so tired of (fill in the blank here) that we don’t think we can go on.

The Lord simply says:

Do you not know? Have you not heard?

For the Lord God Almighty, the everlasting God and Creator of the ends of the earth, gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. And everyone will grow tired and weary; everyone will stumble and fall. Even the young.

In the midst of their fatigue and weakness, the Lord, and only the Lord, makes them to soar up on wings like eagles. He helps them to run and walk without weariness or feeling faint.

We only need to do one thing and this is the key, the one thing we miss when we’re looking for relief from the exhaustion life brings upon us.

All we need to do is hope in the Lord for when we do, He will renew our strength. This is His promise and the Lord always keeps His promises perfectly.

Are you weary today?

Put your hope in the Lord and He will renew your strength.

Are you counted among the weak today?

Put your hope in the Lord and He will renew your strength.

Do you feel exhausted, like you’re ready to collapse under the weight of your responsibilities, whether at work or at home?

Put your hope in the Lord and He will renew your strength.

Friends, what a blessed assurance we have in this! For as we live this thing called life and experience the fatigue and weariness that often accompanies that living, it’s comforting to know that we can always find our strength renewed when we need a recharge.

All we need to do is place our hole in the Lord, the One who gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.

Where would we be without Him?

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
