The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Do you not know? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.

Isaiah 40:28

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Gave you ever tried to fathom something?

It’s not exactly a word we use all the time in our vocabulary. Perhaps we hear or read it more often than we say it, whether it’s used as a noun or verb. As we look at today’s scripture and our continued look at who God is and what it means to us as we live this thing called life, we will find the word “fathom” used and so we had best know how to apply it and then talk to others about what it means.

The textbook definitions of the word provide us these insights:

a. When used as a noun, a unit of length equal to six feet (approximately 1.8 m), chiefly used in reference to the depth of water.

b. When used as a verb, to measure depth (usually water) or to understand (a difficult problem or a mysterious person) after much thought.

So in sum, we are looking deep into something or someone to try and understand it.

If we use it as a measurement to establish depth of water, perhaps we want to know if there is enough room for a boat or ship to pass through without running aground or want to know how deep under the sea’s surface something lays. This is a more statistical approach as we want to attach a numerical value which translates into our understanding of how deep water is.

But if we use the word fathom to try and gain insight and understanding into someone, then the measurement becomes more difficult. It’s not as cut and dry and taking a vertical measurement from the surface to where we want to measure. It takes time and a lot of thought and analysis to try and understand a person and the more complex that person is, the greater the difficulty. Maybe you’ve experienced this as you tried to comprehend why people in and around you behave the way they do. When someone does something that seems incomprehensible to us, we might say that we can’t “fathom” why they would do such a thing. In essence, all we’re really saying is that we cannot understand that person’s behavior. We don’t have the depth of insight as to why they did what they did.

With this latter knowledge, we turn back to verse 28 of Isaiah, Chapter 28 and see a quality of God that makes Him who He is and establishes where we are in relation to Him:

Do you not know? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.  I
saiah 40:28

I think there have been more than a few people who have tried to figure out who God is. They seek to want to know everything about Him, perhaps so they might be able to think exactly as He thinks. And although we are called to ever strive to be holy and righteous, to be seen more and more like we were created in God’s image, we will never reach a point where we will be exactly like Him in any way. It’s a fruitless endeavor. The scripture tells us this and so I can see God easily telling people who are trying to understand all that He is:

Do you not know? Have you not heard? (My) understanding no one can fathom.

No one can get to the root of what God understands. It’s way too deep for mere human beings like you and me and so we need to spend our time on far more pressing things, like seeking and carrying out the will and way of the Lord in all that we do and in doing so, seek His understanding and wisdom, the very understanding and wisdom that we will be unable to fathom.

You see, we don’t need full understanding of all what God is. We just need to tap into Him and allow the wisdom and understanding He wants us to have to download into our hearts and minds and souls. Trust me when I say that He will give you just what you need, whenever you need it so you will always be able to discern things, no according to your will and desires, but rather according to His.

After all, where else would we go for anything we need. For the Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth with an infinite power that leads Him to never grow tired or weary.

Do you not know? Have you not heard?

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
