The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Lord, Your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health. You restore my health and allow me to live! Yes, this anguish was good for me.

Isaiah 38:16-17a

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

How many times have you gotten a cold in your life?

I think we get them so often that we tend to forget that people can and do die from it. It happens. And yet, when we get a cold and then recover, we typically attribute our recovery to medication or time or rest or vitamins or any of these combined without giving credit where credit is due, specifically to the God who leads us to health and life, the Lord who restores our health.

The truth of the matter is there are a myriad of afflictions out there that could impact our lives in a moment’s notice. Just ask anyone who went to their doctor and heard the words diabetes or cancer or maybe even measles or mumps or, more severe, ebola.

Friends, we had better give thanks every second of every minute of every hour of every day that the Lord God Almighty delivers and rescues us from death and leads us to health and life. He is our Great Physician and the only One who can tend to us with power to heal every malady with just a touch of His almighty hands. No one else can do that for us. No one.

Hezekiah certainly knew this truth and after he had been ill and faced down death only to have God reverse things and bring him a new lease on life, he wrote these words:

Lord, Your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health. You restore my health and allow me to live! Yes, this anguish was good for me. vv. 16.17a

In the end translation as we live this thing called life, whether in biblical times or times of the 21st century, we are going to face our share of challenges.

We are going to go through hardships and times of trouble.

We are going to fail and fall as a result of giving into sinful desires and temptations.

And we are going to find ourselves dealing with illness and ailments and injuries of many kinds.

Through it all, we can cope and overcome because we have a God who is a Deliverer, a God who loves us enough to rescue us from our trials, our sins, and our sickness, restoring us to His kingdom’s work here on earth as we seek to carry out His will and way.

Thanks be to God for all that He was for Hezekiah and others, all that He is for us, and all that He is yet to be. Without Him and the power of His deliverance, we would be doomed.

Tomorrow, we finish this series and examine through the words from Hezekiah how God delivers us from death.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
