THREE THINGS

Can I pray for you in any way? Send any prayer requests to OurChristianWalk@aol.com.

In Christ, Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down — this leaning wall, this tottering fence? Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse.

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.

Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: “Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”; and, “You reward everyone according to what they have done.”

Psalm 62

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

If you were asked to give three important viewpoints of God, what would you say?

Perhaps you could draw on the three found at the end of the 62nd Psalm.

For David, a man after God’s own heart, draws focus to the following three key characteristics of the Father who created us all:

1. Power belongs to you, God.

We serve a God who is omnipotent. There is nothing beyond the work of His almighty hands. This is why the scriptures remind us that nothing is impossible with God (Matthew 19:26). Consider all the awesome works God has done from the creation story in Genesis, to the parting of the sea to allow the fleeing Israelites to cross on dry land while pursued by Pharoah in Exodus, to the slaying of a Philistine giant by a young shepherd boy who wrote the very words we are studying from. This same God would display His power by resurrecting His only Son Jesus from death to life and He continues to show us His mighty works to this very day as He will forever more. Indeed, power belongs to God.

It was this assurance that gave David bold confidence. He knew God was his rock and fortress, a place where he could find refuge and not be shaken.

Do you know God this way in your life? Do you believe the words of Romans 8:31 which asks, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

If so, then you will stand firm against any and all adversity, trusting in the God of power who cares for you and holds your life in His hands.

2. You reward everyone according to what they have done.

This Creator God of power we serve is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. He is also the Judge of all judges. He sees and assesses everything that we do. Nothing is hidden from His sight (Hebrews 4:13).

So what does God see when He looks at you, when everything is uncovered and laid bare before Him?
Will He discover things He favors or will He find things He despises?

We should consider this, don’t you think?

I think so. For this God of infinite power will reward everyone according to what they have done. This means He can bless those who are obedient to His will and way. And it also means He can impose penalty on those who sin against Him.

We have a choice. Our reward can be good or bad depending on what path we decide to take.

3. With you, Lord, is unfailing love.

Perhaps this is the easiest characteristic to think of when we think of God for He is love (1 John 4:16). And with this, we only know how to love because He loved us first (1 John 4:19).

As Christians, we need only look to our namesake, Jesus the Christ, to see God’s love personified. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son so that whosoever believeth in Him would never perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). God’s unfailing love for us can be found in His offer of salvation to us all for He wished that we all might live and never perish. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us and the scriptures tell us that this is how God demonstrated His love (Romans 5:8). None of us warranted deliverance; we all deserved wrath and judgment instead. But that’s not the God we serve.

For we serve a God of grace and love and mercy, a God of hope. And like David, our souls can find rest in this truth for our salvation depends on the inheritance offered to us through Jesus, the Way and Truth and Life, as well as the only Way we can come to the Father. There is no other way to live with our all powerful, almighty God except through accepting His Son as Savior.

Have you experienced the fullest measure of God’s unfailing love for you? If not, then maybe you need to draw into a closer relationship with Him through Christ Jesus.

It’s my prayer that you will today.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
