BE STILL

Can I pray for you in any way? Send any prayer requests to OurChristianWalk@aol.com.

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Psalm 46:1-10-11

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

As I drove home tonight on the interstate, I was reminded about how our world is often built upon non-stop action as people zoomed in and out of traffic enroute to their final destinations.

It’s true isn’t it? We need everything fast today.

We rush from point to point to accomplish as much as we can squeeze into each day.

We have schedules with little white space as we never seem to have enough time to do everything we want to do. Rest is not usually an option.

We have fast food so we can eat and run. We have ATM’s so we can punch a few buttons and get instant money. Our highways have multiple lanes and elevated speed limits to help us get where we’re going faster.

We can opt for express shipping, express delivery, and express check outs.

We’re not people who like to wait. After all, we have so many things to do.

Video games are all the rage today and most of them move at an adrenaline-producing, heart-pounding, frenetic pace. Quick reflexes are needed on controllers and mind processes need to run wide open to keep up with the game being played.

Indeed, we are anything but still in our lives. At least that is, until trouble comes upon us. Maybe you can relate.

Maybe it happens when an illness falls on someone and brings their lives and their dreams to a screeching halt.

Maybe it comes when a man or woman is so consumed with their work that they don’t make time to pause and consider the family they are placing second. That is, until that family is no longer there for them as the spouse leaves and seeks divorce.

Maybe it occurs when someone spends every waking moment trying to get rich. They can’t spend enough of their time researching the market and looking for that big gain. Then the market crashes down and they lose everything they invested.

Or maybe we are out on that highway trying to make time when we try to whip into a lane prematurely and we cause an accident which disables our vehicle and causes damage to another. It’s hard to go when you have nothing to go in.

Yes, if we aren’t willing to slow down on our own, life has a way of slowing us and I can’t help but think that this is by God’s design at times.

For as we look at the final two verses of the 46th Psalm, the message from God is simple:

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God.

God doesn’t tell us to be still when we decide to be still. He doesn’t say we can choose to not be still if we’re too busy. No, He simply says, “Be still and know that I am God.”

We can’t get to know God unless we stop running around and start to build a relationship with Him. He gave us all we have. The least we can do is pause and give Him a part of the time He blesses us with.

I’ll close with the words of my favorite songs, Be Still and Know, by contemporary Christian singer, Steven Curtis Chapman. I’ll also include a link for you to listen to the song and consider its words:

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is holy
Be still, O restless soul of mine
Bow before the Prince of peace
Let the noise and clamor cease
Be still

Be still and know that He is God
Be still and know that He is faithful
Consider all that he has done
Stand in awe and be amazed
And know that He will never change
Be still

Be Still, and know that He is God
Be Still, and know that He is God
Be Still, and know that He is God

Be Still; Be speechless

Be still and know that he is God
Be still and know he is our Father
Come rest your head upon his breast
Listen to the rhythm of his unfailing heart of love
Beating for His little ones
Calling each of us to come
Be still, Be still

Friends, I pray that you will be still and know that God is holy and faithful, that you’ll consider all He has done and be left in awestruck amazement. I hope that you will come to know Him as your Father who longs to hold you in His arms and show you the unfathomable depth of His love. And I yearn for you to enter into God’s perfect peace, the peace that only comes from the Prince of peace, a peace that transcends understanding (Philippians 4:6-7).

Blessings to you always.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
