The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?”

“Listen, listen to Me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to Me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, My faithful love promised to David.”

Isaiah 55:1-3

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

We all hunger and thirst. It’s a basic part of our physical needs. Go without water and/or food for an extended period of time and you will face the threat of death, either from starvation or dehydration or both. Such is our need that we wouldn’t even consider going without food or drink. It would be suicidal to do otherwise, to deprive ourselves of needed nutrients until we lose life.

Still, the food we eat and water we drink is not enough to truly sustain us. The world would say it is but the world does not speak the truth. In order to get that, we need to go to the source of perfect truth. We need to go to the Lord.

You see, we are more than just physical beings. We are spiritual ones as well and there is a part of our spirit that has a deep need to be filled and nourished. Blaise Pascal, a French Christian philosopher who lived in the 1600’s, said this:

“What else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace? This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him, seeking in things that are not there the help he cannot find in those that are, though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object; in other words by God himself” (from the work Pensées).

It was this writing that led to the concept that we all have a “God-shaped hole” inside us, a hole that remains empty and leaves us feeling that way spiritually unless we turn to God and allow Him to fill it. And just in case you think this has no Biblical connection, consider these words from Jesus as He taught through His Beatitudes:

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6

When we turn to the Lord, seeking for Him to fill our deep spiritual yearning, we will never come away disappointed. For our hunger and thirst for His righteousness will not go unmet. We will be filled and fully satisfied and it will not cost us anything except our faithful devotion and dedication to our sole source for spiritual fulfillment.

In other words, through the Lord we will always freely receive all we need to be sustained. He will always fully occupy that God-shaped hole within us when we seek His righteousness.

That’s the message we find from Jesus and that’s the message as well from our scripture passage for today, drawn from the opening three verses of Isaiah 55. Look again at those words here:

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?”

“Listen, listen to Me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Give ear and come to Me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, My faithful love promised to David.”
Isaiah 55:1-3

Did you get the message from the Lord for you today?

You cannot buy the kind of satisfaction you find in the Lord who gives fills your spiritual hunger and thirst without cost. All we need to do is to lend Him our ears and listen to His guidance and direction. When we do, He will feed us with it so that we might live, not just in this life on earth but in the eternal life promised to us when we place our belief and trust in Jesus as Savior, the everlasting covenant made with us by God through His Son.

Do you find yourself hungering and thirsting for something more in life than this world is giving you?

Come freely to the Lord, lend Him your ear and listen for His instruction, hunger and thirst for His righteousness, and He will make sure you are always filled and content.

When you come to the Lord with an open heart and mind, willing and ready to receive His Spirit, He will sustain you, now and forever.

I guarantee it.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
