The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord turns my darkness into light.
With your help I can advance against a troop (or run through a barricade); with my God I can scale a wall.
2 Samuel 22:29-30
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
Have you ever walked in darkness in your life?
I have and I can tell you that there is no worse place to be. For when we are in the darkness, we find our hope turn to despair…we find ourselves losing our way off of the path that the Lord has paved before us. And it’s there…off the path that the Lord has paved for us…that we are vulnerable to attack by Satan.
David had allowed himself to be drawn into darkness as he had surrendered to his lust for Bathsheba and committed adultery with her. And Satan only made matters worse from there, further drawing David into the dark as Bathsheba became pregnant and David schemed against her husband to try and hide his sin, eventually seeing to it that he was killed in battle.
Yes, David knew what it was like to have walked in darkness.
But he also knew what it was like to rediscover the Lord’s favor and return to the Light.
For well after David’s sinful behavior, the Lord delivered him from his enemies, taking what could have been a very dark time in David’s life and turning it into light. For as David fled those who wished to do him harm, the Lord lit the way for him to stay free from harm until the blessed day when David was restored to the throne over Israel and Judah.
Truly, David spoke from first hand experience when he wrote, “You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord turns my darkness into light.”
But return to the light of the Lord wasn’t the only thing that David gained from the Lord. For as we see, he also was granted a special power to escape danger…for that’s something that happens when we are walking in the light.
In David’s case, he acknowledged that the Lord had given him the help and strength needed to do whatever it took to avoid his adversaries…whether it involved advancing against troops, running through barricades or scaling a wall. No matter what obstacle was put in David’s path, he was able to overcome it, not by his strength but only by the strength of the Lord within him.
We need to know and trust that the same Lord that empowered David in times of trouble, also stands ready to empower us as well. All we need do is trust Him and seek His will for whatever our circumstances are…knowing that He will grant us anything we need to ensure His will is done (1 John 5:14-15.)…trusting that we can do all things through the strength He grants us (Philippians 4:13).
Question: What difficulties are you facing today? Are you going through a dark time?
If so, why not turn, like David, to the Lord who is the Lamp that guides us from the darkness into His wonderful, glorious light. And as you transition to better, brighter days…come to a place of praise as you fully experience His strength and power…a strength and power that helps restore you and lead you to His future purpose for your life. Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
