The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
He said: "The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior — from violent men you save me.
2 Samuel 22:2-3
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
As we have studied the life of David there have been two constants.
First, David was always in trouble. It seemed that there was hardly a time when he wasn’t in battle or having to flee for his life from an enemy that wished him dead.
The second constant was that the Lord was with David and kept him safe during those times of trouble. Despite his enemy’s best efforts, they were never able to kill David because the Lord, who had selected and anointed him king, was always with him.
And so given these two constants, David composed a song of praise and thanksgiving for all that the Lord had done for him. Through his lyrics, we can gain appreciation for all that he saw in the Lord and are reminded that He is the same for us today.
Let’s look at all the things the Lord was to David and still is to us today:
1. The Lord is our rock.
As David’s life seemed like it was always on less than solid ground, he knew that he always had a firm foundation on which to stand in the Lord. We all are in need of that same foundation in our lives…a foundation that can keep us steadied and free from falling. All we need to do to keep our foundation intact is turn to the Lord for our daily guidance and accept all that He will bring to us in the way of His word and Spirit of truth.
2. The Lord is our fortress.
In the times of David, cities would often build protective walls around them, providing critical protection to its people within while allowing effective counter-attack against any enemy. David recognized that the only fortress he truly had was in the Lord…the One who would build His wall of protection around David and keep him from harm…just as He will do for anyone who places their faith and trust in Him.
3. The Lord is our deliverer.
David knew full well that life is dangerous and full of potential hazard. He also knew that the only way he made it from day to day was through the deliverance of the Lord who protected him and watched over him…just as He does us as we walk through our own world and its associated dangers. David had comfort in knowing His deliverer…and we should feel likewise, giving appropriate thanks daily for how the Lord brings us through unharmed.
4. The Lord is our refuge.
Despite his best efforts to avoid trouble, David still found himself under constant attack, often times needing shelter from his enemies. He saw that the Lord was the One true refuge he could run to…no matter what the danger was…and find security. It was his comfort and confidence and it’s ours as well when we too run into times of peril.
5. The Lord is our shield.
A shield was very valuable in battle. If used right, it would deflect attempts by the enemy to fatally stab or shoot its holder. David had certainly came under a few attacks during his life and came away from them all unwounded and unharmed. And He saw that this only happened because he had the Lord shielding him from injury. The Lord continues to cover us today with His protection…to keep us unscathed despite Satan’s best attempts to wound us. What a blessed assurance we have…just as David did…to know we have an Almighty, Powerful Shield in the Lord Almighty.
Friends, indeed the Lord is all these things…our rock, fortress, deliverer, refuge and shield…all this and so much more. What an assurance and comfort this is to be for us! For like David, we need never forget this about our God…He is an ever present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1) We only need to turn to Him…and He’s there to keep us always safe. Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
