The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”

Then Jesus declared, “I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.”

“No one has seen the Father except the One who is from God; only He has seen the Father. Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life. I am the Bread of Life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the Bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living Bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this Bread will live forever. This Bread is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”

John 6:34-35, 46-51

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Jesus has miraculously fed them and many others, nearly 5,000 in total, with five barley loaves and two small fish before going to sea with His disciples and heading to Capernaum. Impressed and looking to be fed again, the crowd who had followed Jesus to Capernaum had hoped in their hearts to get more food from this man of miracles but Jesus knew they needed far more than the food that would spoil and fail to endure. And so He told them this:

“Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true Bread from heaven. For the Bread of God is the Bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” John 6:32-33

You’ll remember the crowd of Jews remembered how manna had come from the heavens to provide provision for their Israelite ancestors as they journeyed from their Egyptian captivity to the land God had promised to give them. Jesus made sure they knew that Moses had not made that manna come but God Himself, the God that not only gave the manna but the “true Bread from heaven” that God sent to give “life to the world”.

It was this bread, the “true Bread from heaven” that would “give life” that the people desired as they said to Jesus:

“Sir, always give us this bread.”

And so Jesus made sure they knew who represented the “true Bread from heaven”, the food that would endure to eternal life (John 6:27), declaring:

“I am the ‘Bread of Life’. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.”

“I am the ‘Bread of Life’.

When we sum this all up, the message is clear.

All the Jews needed was Jesus and this has remained true ever since because He is the true Bread, the Bread of Life, not just temporarily but forever. For God so loved the world that He sent His Son down from heaven so that those who believe in Him will never die and live forever. They will never go hungry or thirst again.

In Jesus, believers have found their sustenance since He came from heaven and earth to bring salvation. Indeed, in Him we always find ourselves satisfied and fulfilled, never hungering or thirsting for anything else.

Is this the place you find yourself in today?

Or do you find yourself yearning and yearning and yearning, never able to find contentment and peace in your life, hungering and thirsting for more than what life is giving you?

If you’re in the latter, Jesus is waiting for you, waiting for you to place your belief in Him. For as the scriptures clearly proclaim, all one needs to do is believe in Jesus in order to gain the food that never spoils and endures to eternal life.

Come to the One who is not only the Bread of Life but your Savior. You’ll never regret that you did.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
