The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“Where will this happen, Lord?” the disciples asked.

Jesus replied, “Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near.”

Luke 17:37 (NLT)

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Jesus had told His disciples that a day was coming when the Son of Man (talking of Himself, of course) was going to come. On that day, He told His followers to expect:

…Him to first have to be rejected and suffer, something that indeed happened as He was rebuffed by the Jews, falsely accused, and died crucified to a cross.

…that His return would be sudden and swift, like a flash of lightning.

…that when He did return, no one would know it was coming. In fact, many people would be just going through business as usual, not understanding the significance of the event. Some people would be taken (those who had accepted Him) and others left behind (those who rejected Him).

…not being able to take anything with them. His followers were to lose their worldly life so they could gain eternity with their Savior forever. He would take them just as they were with no possessions needed.

How did the disciples respond to these proclamations and affirmations?

We see in the final verse of Luke, Chapter 7 and I’ll be using the New Living Translation as it provides the most understandable rendering this verse. Look again at these words now:

“Where will this happen, Lord?” the disciples asked.

Jesus replied, “Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near.”  Luke 17:37 (NLT)

Jesus’ followers didn’t get into any question and answer session regarding what Jesus said would occur. There were no inquiries seeking clarity nor debates over the validity of His claims. There wasn’t any of that. Instead, the disciples asked a simple question:

“Where will this happen, Lord?”

Of course, the followers were most interested in the place where the things Jesus said would happen. They may not be able to know the day or time but at least they might know where to look. Here’s how Jesus replied:

“Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near.”

Note here that there was no specific place the disciples could look for in regard to the signs Jesus said would indicate His return. This is because the resultant events would occur globally. There would be nowhere on earth that people would not find some people taken and others left behind. The indicators would happen all over the world and this would be as sure as vultures gathering around a dead carcass, something that would only not transpire unless the world was void of vultures. This reminds us of one important truth about our Savior:

If He said something was going to happen, you know with complete confidence that it will.

This is because Jesus is the Truth as well as the Way and Life (John 14:6). There is no falsehood within Him.

He is returning.

He will leave behind anyone who rejected Him and His offer of salvation.

and

He will take those who place their belief, trust, and hope in Him as Savior to dwell within forever.

What will happen to you at that moment when He comes again?

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
