The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.”

Luke 17:34-36

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Picture these scenes.

A person is in line at the post office with a box they need to mail to a family member. There is another person behind them who told the post office customer service agent they were there to buy stamps. There is one other person behind them and they are there to rent a post office box to receive mail. All of the people are there for the same reason. They need a service the postal service provides.

All of a sudden, there is a deafening sound and a brilliant flash of light that comes from outside the post office. In the blink of an eye, the first and third person in line disappear and the person who needed stamps is the only one left in line, standing there wondering what happened to the others as well as the post office customer service agent who is also gone. The person wonders out loud:

“Where did they go?”

Across town from the post office at the time of the thundering sound and bright lightning like flash across the sky, two cars were driving down a street. Both had different destinations they were heading to but they shared the same street. That was what they had in common but as soon as the blinding bright light consumed the sky, the lead car veered swiftly to the right and crashed. The trailing car quickly pulled over and the driver ran to the damaged vehicle only to see that there was no driver. The air bag had deployed during the crash but the person at the wheel was nowhere to be found, leaving the witness to ask them self:

“Where did they go?”

I could go on and paint countless numbers of similar scenarios about what will take place when Jesus returns and I’m not simply hypothesizing what might happen. This isn’t something dreamed up by this writer, a speculative illustration about what might happen. Rather, it is exactly what Jesus Himself would happen. Look again at His words here as we finish this three devotion series and continue to study from the latter verses of chapter 17:

“I tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding grain together; one will be taken and the other left.” Luke 17:34-36

What night was Jesus talking about?

Step back a few verses from today’s passage and you will see He is speaking about the day He, the Son of Man, returns to earth and is revealed, a time of which no one knows the exactness of, a time that will come sudden and swiftly, a time when those who are not in Jesus will experience sudden death while whose who placed their belief and trust in Him will be taken to live with Him and God the Father forever.

No everyone is going to get to eternal life. Some will be taken by Jesus. Others will be left behind to perish on the earth. While asleep, Jesus makes it clear that He will take one person while another is left.

Ditto for two people working on the same task together. One will be taken by Jesus and disappear, leaving the other grain grinder alone.

This leads me to some questions for you, my readers:

Which way will it go for you when Jesus comes back?

Will you be taken away into glory by Him as you receive the salvation God promised when you believed in Jesus as your Savior?

Or will you find yourself left behind, destined for sudden death, feeling as abandoned and rejected as you made Jesus feel in the life you chose to live without Him?

If you are in the latter category as you read this, please change your outcome forever this very moment and accept Jesus, the Son of God who offered Him up as a sacrifice to atone for your sins. Receive Him as your Savior, allow Him to change the person you are and the way you live from the inside out, and secure your place in glory where you will abide in perfect love and peace forever, liberated from all the trappings and afflictions of this world.

It’s a decision you will never regret, neither now or for all eternity.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
