The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for Me?”

Jeremiah 32:26-27

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

How many times do we come upon things in life that are hard?

All the time, right?

It doesn’t take much time to realize that difficulties, hardships, and challenges abound and in the midst of these, we can find ourselves wondering if we can make it. We tire under the weight of our burdens and see ourselves as seemingly incapable of escaping our circumstances. And to add to the problem, Satan is always found in the center, always trying to convince us that there is no hope and that we are inadequate, failures in life who are destined to remain down and out.

Have you ever been there?

Maybe, just maybe, you or someone you know is there this very day.

Going back to Old Testament Israel in the time of the prophet Jeremiah, the Israelites had to be feeling overwhelmed and defeated, despondent and despaired.

They had everything going for them. Possessions, a secure land to abide in, and a God who had assured them He was with them. All they had to do was serve and obey Him in obedience, something they failed to do.

By now, if you have been a regular reader of these daily devotions, you’re well aware of the sins of the Israelites that led to God’s punishment. God had set commandments in place, providing them to the ancestors of the Israelites of Jeremiah’s day, and those commandments were clear.

The Israelites were not to bow down or worship any gods outside of the Lord God Almighty, the one true God. They were to be completely devoted to Him and if they were, then He would be completely devoted to them.

But the Israelites couldn’t meet that requirement and chose to give attention and adoration to the pagan gods worshipped by Gentiles in their midst, even after constant warnings from prophets to stop, repent, and rededicate themselves to God. God’s people failed to take Him seriously so He had to show them just how big a mistake that was.

And so the Israelites of the Southern Kingdom of Judah, which included the holy city of Jerusalem, were attacked by the Babylonians under the leadership of King Nebuchadnezzar and after their city and towns were left in ruins, they were hauled away into a seventy-year captivity. That’s a long way to live in oppression away from your homeland and even though God had assured His people that after the seventy years, He would make a way for them to return home, the people still had to wonder if their adversity and suffering would ever end. They saw the way through as being far beyond what they could do on their own.

Enter the words found in two simple verses as we continue to study from the 32nd chapter of Jeremiah, words that we should write on our hearts and minds today:

“Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for Me?” Jeremiah 32:26-27

I want you to note who is speaking to Jeremiah. It isn’t some advisor or counselor or friend giving their opinion. No, it is the Lord Himself who reminds the prophet (and us) that He and He alone is the God of all mankind, the One who created all things. He, the Lord, made the heavens and the earth and everything within them, and He did so through a power that is unmatched and unrivaled by anything in the heavens or earth. It was true in the Old Testament days and it’s still true today here in the 21st century.

The Lord God Almighty possesses infinite power. He is omnipotent in every way and thus there is nothing beyond the work of His hands.

Or in other words, there is nothing too hard for Him. Nothing.

Friends, I want you to embrace this today. I want you to remember that no matter what you are going through, God is greater, far greater than your circumstances and He is standing by to help you work through whatever you’re up against in accordance with His will and purposes for you and your life.

There is no doubt that we serve a Lord who has done, is doing, and will continue to do the impossible, showing us that He is more than able and capable to handle what we’re going through.

Won’t you place your hope and trust in Him today and lay whatever burdens you have at His feet?

Although they may be too hard for you, none of them are beyond His power and strength. Believe it!

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
