The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him a second time: “This is what the Lord says, He who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it—the Lord is His name: ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’”

Jeremiah 33:1-3

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

I have a few questions for you.

How extensive is your intellect and knowledge?

Seriously, how much do you really know?

Most of us like to think we know a lot and there are some people out there who think they know everything. Maybe you have run into a few of them in your lifetime. But when we get right down to it, we are all very limited when it comes to knowing things.

It’s that way with the things of the world and it is certainly that way with the things of God. For even the most educated and well-versed theologians will admit that they are only scratching the surface when it comes to the ways and word of the Lord.

Simply put, God’s ways are great and unsearchable by man because none of us have the power to search Him. However, when it comes to the other way around, we are totally searchable and there is nothing about us that the Lord doesn’t know.

So how are we to become educated on the ways and word of the Lord? How can we expect to know enough to be effective in His service and in revealing our testimony of Him?

The answer comes in developing and then continuing to nurture a relationship with the Lord God Almighty.

Jeremiah, God’s appointed prophet, certainly was invested in building and sustaining a relationship with Him. He sought the Lord’s guidance and listened to receive His instruction in order to effectively share it with the people. But when Jeremiah did this, the Israelites didn’t like what he had to say and so their king, Zedekiah, imprisoned Jeremiah and held him captive. It was a fruitless endeavor as we will see in today’s passage from the opening verses of Jeremiah 33 because you can do all you can to keep someone held hostage but you will never keep the Lord from entering into their presence and imparting His wisdom, guidance, and character.

While Jeremiah was still confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him a second time: “This is what the Lord says, He who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established it—the Lord is His name: ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’”  Jeremiah 33:1-3

Note a couple of things here that were revealed when the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah while he was in captivity:

1. We can be in a lot of places in life, good and bad, but we’ll never be too far from the Lord’s reach when it comes to Him speaking to us and delivering on His promise to impart His wisdom and direction. No one can isolate us from Him.

2. He is the God of all creation which He brought to be through an unrivaled, unmatched power and might. He made and formed the earth and fashioned everything within it. You can throw in the massive expanse of the heavens, full of planets and stars and other astronomical entities.

3. No matter where we are and/or what we are going through, the Lord is always standing by and waiting to impart on us great and unsearchable things that we do not know. The depths of His knowledge are unfathomable and so we should be ever seeking to dip down into Him to find insight and illumination on all matters of life.

Friends, we are blessed because despite our limitations, we serve a Lord who is limitless and longs to share His knowledge, power, and love with the people He formed with His very hands at the same time period that He was fashioning the very world we abide in.

In the end translation, the Lord is longing to share what He knows with us in order that we might understand Him better and fulfill His purposes. All we need to do is to follow the lead of Jeremiah and be ready to receive Him when He calls to bring to us great and unsearchable things, no matter what our life circumstances may be when it happens.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
