The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “This is what the Lord says: ‘If you can break My covenant with the day and My covenant with the night, so that day and night no longer come at their appointed time, then My covenant with David My servant—and My covenant with the Levites who are priests ministering before Me—can be broken and David will no longer have a descendant to reign on his throne. I will make the descendants of David My servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.’”

The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “Have you not noticed that these people are saying, ‘The Lord has rejected the two kingdoms He chose’? So they despise My people and no longer regard them as a nation. This is what the Lord says: ‘If I have not made My covenant with day and night and established the laws of heaven and earth, then I will reject the descendants of Jacob and David my servant and will not choose one of his sons to rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them.’”

Jeremiah 33:19-26

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

As we study the scriptures, we see that God’s plan and promise of salvation for His people is the central theme, even in the Old Testament well before Jesus came to earth.

How firm is that plan and promise?

He answers that question in the final verses of Jeremiah, Chapter 33. Look again at these words of God, as spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:

For I will restore their fortunes and have compassion on them.’”  Jeremiah 33:19-26

What would it take for God to remove His covenant from His people?

It would take someone here on earth to learn how to break God’s other covenants, the ones He made with the day and night when He created them. To review, we return to the first book and first chapter of the Bible:

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day. Genesis 1:3-5, 14-19

Think about it. Everything we know today was dictated by an infinitely powerful Creator God. No one else was involved.

We see the sun come up to bring us day and then watch it set to usher in night. It happens day after day after day, so much so that we can lose our sheer amazement at the timing and synchronicity of it all. It is a perfect design by a perfect Designer and no one or nothing can or will ever be able to change what God has put in place. It was true in Jeremiah’s day, it’s true today, and it will be true forever. Any notion that what God has set in place can be altered can be met with one response:

It’s never going to happen.

So with this, can you see the obvious connection to God’s salvation covenant?

It would not and it will not ever be broken.

God promised out of His deep love for us that all those who would believe in His only Son Jesus, freely given by Him to pay the price for the sins of all mankind, will not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

It’s an absolute we can trust because God always keeps His promises. Always.

Anyone who places their hope and trust in Jesus as Savior will be saved.

And to anyone who thinks they can take that covenant promise away, the same disappointment would await them that would come on anyone who thinks they might be able to alter the way the day and night occur.

For it’s not going to happen because no one can rival the Almighty, Creator, Saving God we love and serve.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
