The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
This is what the Lord says:
“Heaven is My throne, and earth is
My footstool. What house could you possibly build for Me? And what place could
be My home? My hand made all these things, and so they all came into being. This
is the Lord’s declaration.”
Isaiah 66:1-2a
(HCSB)
This ends today’s reading from God's holy
word. Thanks be to God.
Consider
the immensity of the Lord for a moment.
If
someone were to ask you how big He is, about the vastness of His domain, how
would you reply?
We don’t need
to go too far for the answer because the Lord tells us Himself in the opening
verses of the final chapter of the Book of Isaiah. Look again at these words
here:
This is what the Lord says:
“Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool. What house could you
possibly build for Me? And what place could be My home? My hand made all these
things, and so they all came into being. This is the Lord’s declaration.” Isaiah
66:1-2a (HCSB)
So how
big is the Lord?
As big as
creation itself, the very creation He made and brought into being with His own
hands.
Think
about when you are sitting on your favorite easy chair with your feet propped
up comfortably on a footstool, resting at ease within your household in your little
personal realm. Now consider the picture the Lord paints for us. His throne is
heaven. That’s a really large easy chair and to make it an even bigger
illustration, He has His feet propped up on the entire earth. Wow, that’s a lot
of coverage!
With all
this in mind, we can now approach the rest of this passage with complete
understanding because as the Israelites were preparing for life after exile in
Babylon, one of their chief concerns was rebuilding God’s temple upon their
return to Jerusalem. The Lord wanted to remind them of His enormity so they
could ensure their priorities were in the right place. Rather, than worry about
building a house for Him, the Lord desired more for the people to get right
with Him in their hearts and minds, obediently dedicating themselves to His
will and way, something they had not done prior to His judgment coming upon
them.
In other
words, the Lord was more interested in making His home in the hearts of His
people than in some man-made structure.
And so as
we finish up this 12th devotion in the 17 devotion series titled, The Lord
Speaks, we find the Lord reminding us that He is bigger than anything we know,
spanning across all creation. No mere home can contain Him and He is far more
interested in dwelling within our souls, His Spirit one with ours, than having
any place of worship constructed that couldn’t contain Him anyways.
With a
Lord as vast and powerful as this, is there anything we will go through that He
can’t handle?
Perhaps
we should remember this:
Our
problems may seem big but our God is always bigger.
Amen.
In
Christ,
Mark
