The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

The word of the Lord came to me: “What do you see, Jeremiah?”

“I see the branch of an almond tree,” I replied.

The Lord said to me, “You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that My word is fulfilled.”

The word of the Lord came to me again: “What do you see?”

“I see a pot that is boiling,” I answered. “It is tilting toward us from the north.”

The Lord said to me, “From the north disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land. I am about to summon all the peoples of the northern kingdoms,” declares the Lord.

“Their kings will come and set up their thrones in the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem; they will come against all her surrounding walls and against all the towns of Judah. I will pronounce My judgments on My people because of their wickedness in forsaking Me, in burning incense to other gods and in worshiping what their hands have made.”

Jeremiah 1:11-16

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Here’s what we have found out from our study of the opening chapter of Jeremiah:

1. The Lord sends us His word in many different ways.

2. We are all purposed by the Lord from before the moment we are formed in our mother’s womb.

3. We don’t have any other option than to carry out the purpose the Lord has created us for.

4. When we are doing the Lord’s work, we need not worry about what words to say because He will give them to us.

Today, we add two more important things the Lord wants for us to remember.

First, He is the Supreme Judge over all the earth and everything on it and will pass judgment on those who choose to live in sin and wickedness.

Second, the Lord, our Supreme Judge, is always watching us to ensure we are carrying out His will and way.

We know these things through our scripture passage for today. Look again at these words:

Did you hear the testimony of the Lord God Almighty?

He said to Jeremiah, “I am watching to see that My word is fulfilled.”

In Jeremiah’s case, the Lord was watching to see that he would be obedient in sharing the messages given to him as an appointed prophet.

In the case of the people, the Lord was watching that they remained obedient to His holy word and the commandments therein.

It’s obvious that the latter were not doing such a hot job in pleasing the Lord. We know that because of His pronounced judgment that was coming on the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. In response to His people’s wickedness, the Lord was about to summon fighting forces from the north, first from Assyria and then from Babylon. These forces would besiege the Promised Land and even threaten the holy city of Jerusalem. No one would be spared from the Lord’s consequences.

All this lends itself to a few simple questions for us today:

What does the Lord see when He watches us today?

Does He see us following His Holy Word in obedience or does He see us practicing wickedness in the way we live?

If we are in the latter category, how long will it be before the Supreme Judge send His judgment on us? Are we any better off than the Israelites who openly sinned in His sight?

Friends, the word of the Lord is speaking powerfully to us today. The Lord is watching how we respond. We had better choose to always seek His word and follow its guidance or else.

Let’s not put our Lord to the test. For is we do, we won’t like the outcome, I assure you that.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
