The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
“Listen to me, Jacob, Israel, whom
I have called: I am He; I am the first and I am the last. My own hand laid the
foundations of the earth, and My right hand spread out the heavens; when I
summon them, they all stand up together.”
“Come together, all of you, and
listen: Which of the idols has foretold these things? The Lord’s chosen ally will
carry out His purpose against Babylon; his arm will be against the Babylonians.
I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him. I will bring him, and he
will succeed in his mission.”
Isaiah
48:12-15
This ends this
reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
I am He. Three simple words we find
the Lord speaking to His people (and to us) in our scripture passage as we
continue our study of Isaiah 48.
It really is the three word answer
to any number of questions we might ask God, four of which we can develop from
these verses:
“Listen to me, Jacob, Israel, whom I have called: I am He; I am the
first and I am the last. My own hand laid the foundations of the earth, and My
right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they all stand up
together.”
“Come together, all of you, and listen: Which of the idols has foretold
these things? The Lord’s chosen ally will carry out His purpose against
Babylon; his arm will be against the Babylonians. I, even I, have
spoken; yes, I have called him. I will bring him, and he will succeed in his
mission.” Isaiah 48:12-15
Question 1 from us: Who made all
things?
The Lord responds by saying, “I am
He.”
“I am the first and the last.
Nothing existed before me and nothing will exist after me. I laid the very
foundations of the earth with the same hands that stretched out the heavens
across the sky. I made you and everything you see. I am the Lord God Almighty, Maker
and Creator of all things. No one else can do what I have done, what I am
presently doing, or what I am yet to do. No one.”
Question 2 from us: Who calls us to
do what is right and proper in life?
The Lord responds by saying, “I am
He.”
“I have called you to fulfill My
will and way in life. Your focus needs to be fully on My purposes, purposes
that will always lead you to righteousness and right living unto Me and others.
Follow My guidance and direction and I will lead you away from evil and
wickedness as I transform and conform you to My image so that when people see
you they might see Me within you. And know I will always give you whatever you
need to do what I desire for you to do. I am always with you and for you.”
Question 3 from us: Where do we get
our commands from to carry out your will?
The Lord responds, “I am He.”
“You need to look nowhere else than
to me for your commandments, the instructions I will give you to ensure My will
is carried out as I mean for it to. I command everything. Even the earth and
the heavens are under My authority. Never lean on your own understanding and
know I will never leave you wondering what to do. Wait on Me and listen for I
will grant you your orders in My perfect way and at My perfect time. Obey me
perfectly and you will always be in My favor.”
Question 4 from us: Who knows what
the future holds?
The Lord responds, “I am He.”
“No one else holds what is to come
in their hands as I do. Everything I foretell comes to be. I told of how
Babylon would bring judgment on My people well before it occurred and it played
out just as I said it would. Ditto for how I raised up King Cyrus and the
Persians to defeat the Babylonians and set my people free to return to
Jerusalem to begin the rebuilding process. I ordained it all well before it
happened and it came to be just as I said it would. Do not worry about what’s
to come outside of securing your salvation through My Son, your Savior Jesus.
Outside of that, trust Me and know that I am in control.”
Maybe you have your own questions
for the Lord today like:
Who can I turn to for healing?
Who can help me through my time of
difficulty?
Who can mend my brokenness?
Who can show me the way to a life
full of peace and hope and love?
Of course, the answer to all these
questions is just as it has been for the ones prior when we raise them to God.
For He will always say to you, “I
am He. Just trust Me and know that there is nothing beyond the work of My
hands.”
Amen.
In
Christ,
Mark
