The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

Colossians 3:14

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

When we set our hearts on things above and resolve to put to death our earthly nature, then the Lord can use His Holy Spirit to clothe us with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience as we bear with one another and forgive as the Lord has forgiven us.

That’s what we have learned so far through the first four of ten life resolutions found in God’s word within the third and fourth chapters of Colossians.

This brings us to the fifth resolution and one that you will see bonds every other positive Jesus-like quality in a Christian together. Here it is:

Resolution #5: Put on love and bond with other in unity.

When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, He gave two responses and both were centered on the matter of love.

First, He said we need to love the Lord our God with all our heart and mind and soul and strength (Matthew 22:37).

In other words, we are to love God with all that we have and all that we are. When we do that, then the second love statement from Jesus becomes possible:

Love your neighbor as yourself (22:39).

Can you imagine a world where every single person puts these two commandments into practice?

It would be as close to a paradise here on earth as we could ever imagine.

For indeed, when we are fully centered on God then His love will be fully centered in us, and that is the love we then can share with others, showing them - not our - but His compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forbearance, and forgiveness. The Lord will always reap a harvest of His fruits of the Spirit in and through us when we allow Him to have full control of everything we think, say, or do.

As we look at our world that is increasingly becoming more and more divisive it seems, the way back to unity is for us to put God first, loving Him with everything we have, so we can properly put on love ourselves, a love that will unite us in Him.

This is the critical importance of the fifth life resolution.

Tomorrow, we’ll add number 6.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
