The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

Colossians 3:1-4

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

The third chapter and the opening verses of chapter 4 in Paul’s letter to the Colossians is a treasure trove of commands in regard to how Christians should live. With a concern for the Colossian church, Paul not only wanted the church to remember the supremacy of Jesus but how they were to live in His name. Over the next ten messages, we will look at ten resolutions we should adopt in obedience to the word of God, each intending to help us live more and more like Christ. Here’s Resolution number one:

RESOLUTION 1: Set your hearts on things above, not on earthy things. (3:2)

This first resolution is all about focus and begs the following questions:

Where is your focus in life?

Do you focus on your problems or the One who can handle anything, the Lord through which nothing is impossible?

Do you focus on yourself and your will or do you get outside of you, allowing the Lord to dictate the direction of your life?

When we take our gaze away from ourselves and the world, and turn our eyes toward our Lord, then we stop being self centered and become Christ-centered instead.

And isn’t this what we’re to be as Christians?

Every day offers us a chance to “set our hearts on things above, where Jesus is “seated at the right hand of God”. He told us to “store up treasures in Heaven” (Matthew 6:20) but to do that we need to center our heart’s affection on Heaven and the One who is in authority over it and the earth we live in.

This resolution draws me to these beautiful words from the chorus of the song, “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus

Look full in His wonderful face

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of His glory and grace

Friends, we live in this world but it is only a temporary dwelling place when we have placed our belief in Jesus. Our future, forever home is in Heaven when this life ends and we are assured to appear with our Savior “in glory” before permanently changing our address for all eternity as we inhabit the mansion He has prepared for us (John 14:2-3).

So let us resolve to set our hearts on things above and not earthly things.

Tomorrow, we’ll add Resolution number two.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
