The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

As it is written:

“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”

Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.

2 Corinthians 9:8-10

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Everyone is in need. Everyone.

From the very onset of life when we emerge from our mother’s womb, we are reliant on someone outside of ourselves to provide.

I think we lose sight of the fact that we are dependent on our God to get what we need because we allow the world to convince us that we are self sufficient. We are duped into thinking we are the master of our life, present and future, and we fall into the trap of self reliance and self sufficiency. Everything becomes about us and when that happens, then nothing becomes about the God who creates and then cares for His creation.

In chapter 9 of Second Corinthians, we find our Lord seek to get us reprogrammed through His word. He reminds us that He is the true source of our abundant blessings, the Giver of every good and perfect thing from above (James 1:17).

Note that these blessings carry a purpose.

Our Lord doesn’t bless us abundantly so that we will just horde His money for our own gain and benefit. Rather, He gives us everything we need so we can “abound in every good work” as we carry out His will and way.

In other words, God funds the purposes that He wishes for us to fulfill.

This is what allows us to give and give liberally to others, to model the words of the psalmist and scatter gifts to the poor so that the Lord’s goodness and righteousness might be displayed through us.

And when we give as the Lord wants, extending the riches of His gifts to make a difference in the lives of those in need, He continues to make sure we have everything we need to continue to carry out His calling and accomplish His work.

This is why we need not worry about running out of resources for ourselves as we provide for others freely as God directs. The scriptures assure us in our passage today that God will continue to increase our stores so we might, in turn, produce a greater harvest of righteousness, glorifying and honoring our Lord for the way we show spiritual stewardship through the management of everything He has given.

Friends, what we have is not our own. We get what we need to live and serve others through a God who purposes us and all He provides to us.

How are you doing in the way of paying tribute to your generous Lord through the way you manage what He has given you?

It’s a question we should always be asking ourselves as we analyze how we utilize our time, talent, and treasure.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
