The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By His power God raised the Lord from the dead, and He will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ Himself?

Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”

But whoever is united with the Lord is one with Him in spirit. Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:13b-20

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Believe in Jesus and you not only gain salvation as God one day raises you from the dead as He did His Son. You also become a child of God and co-heir with Christ, a co-heir for the inheritance of God’s kingdom.

What more could anyone ask for in life?

And yet, so many Christians live as if they aren’t satisfied with the rich blessings provided by God because of their belief in His Son. These Christians choose to straddle the line between where the Lord wants them to be and the offerings of the world. In doing so, they begin to display a life that looks more like the world than the Lord who wants them to be one with Him in Spirit, the Holy Spirit that will always lead us to the place the Lord wants us to be if we allow Him to.

And there in is the problem, right?

Instead of placing our full attention on the Lord’s desires for us, we chase after our own. Often, this means compromising our bodies by engaging in sinful behavior such as sexual immorality and we see where this was a problem in the Corinthian church. They say that prostitution is the world’s oldest profession and it’s obvious it ranges all the way back to biblical times because Paul uses it as an analogy to highlight the infidelity that happens when a person knowingly commits transgressions in sight of a God who hates sin. No person is supposed to unite their bodies with anything sinful when their bodies are to be a member of Christ Himself. Any relationship makes two people one flesh and the Lord expects us to be true to Him, to be one flesh with Him and with no one or nothing else.

When we do this, we are united in Him in Spirit and when we are united with Him in Spirit then we will flee from sexual immorality and any other sin we might commit. He will show us how our bodies are temples, bodies that are to be dedicated to Him in honor, bodies that are the temple of the Holy Spirit.

We also understand fully and appreciate what God has done for us, that He loved us so much that He was willing to surrender His only Son Jesus so we might be saved. Our pardon from sin wasn’t free. Rather, it was purchased at a price.

As we live each and every day, let’s do so in such a way that shows God how much we value His gift of salvation by honoring Him with our bodies and our lives.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
