The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed. Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.

1 Corinthians 4:1-5

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

What is more dominant in your life, light or darkness?

In the context of the question, I’m not talking about the worldly transitions from day to night as we enjoy the light of day and then usually sleep under the dark cover of night. Rather, I am talking about the spiritual side of your life. When it comes to your daily spirit, do you feel like you’re living in the light or the dark?

As Christians, we have the gift of being able to live in the light each and every day, at every time, no matter our life circumstances because we believe in Jesus, the One who is the Light of the world.

How do we know this?

Because Jesus said so. Look at his words from the twelfth verse of the Gospel of John, chapter 8:

“I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

If you’re a Christian believer and are feeling like your life is dark, turn to Jesus and you will find the light the life in and through Him.

If you’re a non-believer feeling like you live in darkness, I encourage you to accept Jesus as your personal Savior and follow Him into the light of life.

You see, there’s no need for anyone to live in the dark because anyone can turn to Jesus for true, enduring, never dying light in their life.

Now, there’s another thing that happens when a person steps into the light of life found only in Jesus, something that every believer should want.

It’s accountability.

You see when we sin, and we all are sinners who fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23), we move into the darkness, even in broad daylight although a lot of sin is committed under the cloak of night with the intent of concealing wrongdoing.

But note what we learn from God’s word in today’s passage drawn from the opening verses of 1 Corinthians 4.

The Lord brings everything done in the dark to light.

Nothing we do in the recesses of the dark will go unseen by the Lord. He illuminates what is hidden in the darkness, no matter where it might be, even in the depths of the human heart where no one else can go. A person might be able to put on an outer façade and try to hide inner motives from other people but they can’t block the Lord from seeing within. Rather, the Lord unmasks and exposes our sin by shining His Holy Light.

This allows the Lord to be the ultimate Judge of all people. Paul wasn’t concerned about whether or not he was pleasing the Corinthian church. His only worry was making sure he could stand before the Lord with a clear conscience, even though he was far from innocent. Because of Jesus, not only could Paul walk in the light of life through His Savior, the Light of the world, but he could live with hope and joy, knowing that he was pardoned and forgiven during those times when he fell into sin, those times when he walked in the dark in plain view of the Lord of light.

In the end translation, we always find the Lord’s light trump the darkness and the scriptures assure us that the darkness will never overcome Him (John 1:5). Not now. Not ever.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
