The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

“So you will be My people, and I will be your God.”

Jeremiah 30:22

This ends today’s reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

What is your identity? If someone were to ask what defined you, how would you respond?

Maybe you have never even considered these questions but you should because I think every person at some time or another in life seeks to try and understand their place in life.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a simple explanation as to who we are and whose we are, an explanation that gives us a clear foundation to stand on regarding our very existence in this world today and our respective futures yet to come?

Well, in today’s single scripture verse from the 30th chapter of Jeremiah, we find God clearly giving us answers to the subject at hand in today’s devotion and He does it in just a dozen words. Look at His words again here:

“So you will be My people, and I will be your God.” Jeremiah 30:22

These words came to the Israelites as God was addressing them regarding their Babylonian captivity while offering words of hope for their future. He assured them that the enslavement they were suffering through as a result of His judgment for the sins they had committed would not last forever. Rather, after the seventy year penalty expired, God would make the way clear for them to return to their homeland where they would be able to rebuild their homes, their lives, and their relationships with God. As God had shown over and over again to their ancestors, He was indeed a God of deliverance and restoration, a God of mercy and forgiveness, a God of second chances and redemption.

He was their God and they were His people. It was that way from the very start and it would be that way until the very end. Nothing could change it, even if God, the heavenly Father of all, had to impose discipline on His children. They were His and there was no questioning it. They knew who they were and whose they were.

Fast forward to today and the first month of the year 2016. Nothing has changed regarding God’s heart toward His creation. He is still the God who makes all things through His creation power and that includes every human being. Thus, all people are His people and He is their God. There is no question about this and so there is no question as to what our respective identities are. We are His and nothing will ever change that. And out of His great love for us all, He made the way for us to spend life with Him forever.

Yes, God wants to be our God and He wishes for us to be His people, not just for the duration of our earthly lives but forever. All we need to do is believe and trust in our hearts that He sent His only Son Jesus to bear our sins and die on the cross, a living sacrifice who then rose from the grave after three days, defeating death and rising to new life so we might be able to follow some day. Through these events, Jesus made the way for us to live with God forever and no one comes to be with the Father except through the Son. Because of Jesus, we can always be God’s people and He will always be our God.

Through Jesus, we will always know who we are and whose we are, never ever experiencing an identity crisis again.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
