The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.
The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.
Genesis 2:15-17
This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.
As the creation story is told in a new way in Genesis, Chapter 2, we see in today’s passage that God put the man He created from the dust (Adam) into the Garden of Eden to work and take care of it. Through these two short verses, we find the following three important truths about God revealed.
1. God puts us where He wants us to be.
As we read in verse 15, "God took the man (Adam) and put him into the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it."
The bottom line here is that God is in control. He makes us, He provides for us, and He puts us where He wants us to be. It’s our responsibility to seek and discern His will is for us in the place that He puts us, and then respond in obedience to what He wants us to do.
2. God has a purpose for each of us.
God didn’t just put Adam in the garden and allow him to do what he wanted to do. He gave Adam a specific purpose for being there, tasking him "to work it and take care of it."
Too often, we move through life and its circumstances every day without ever considering what God is expecting from us. One thing is certain, God ALWAYS has a reason for putting us into any one place for any one time. It’s up to us to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit which will lead us to carry out God’s plan just as He desires.
3. God clearly gives us guidance as to what He expects.
Once God placed Adam in the garden, He gave Him clear instruction:
"You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
There’s no gray area here.
God tells Adam that he can eat from every other tree in the Garden of Eden EXCEPT for the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. There were plenty of other sources of food and so this shouldn’t have been a difficult ask.
Further, there wasn’t any gray area here. God gave Adam precise instructions and guess what? He does the same for you and me, and just as it was with Adam, God expects us to exercise obedience as we respond to His will and walk the path He wants us to walk.
So in sum, we need to be familiar with our surroundings and circumstances, focused on situational awareness at all times because God always puts us right where He wants us to be. We need to always remember that He has a purpose and plan for our lives at all times and stands ready to reveal it anytime we ask. And finally, we need to trust that our Lord will provide us with clear and concise direction. All we need to do is remain ready to comply with the leading of the Holy Spirit, every moment of every day.
Amen.
In Christ,
Mark
