The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

This is the written account of Adam’s family line.

When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created.

When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.

When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of Enosh. After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan. After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.

When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel. After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.

When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared. After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.

When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.

When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.

When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. He named him Noah and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.” After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.

After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth.

Genesis 5:1-32

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

At the beginning and end of Genesis, chapter 4, we see how God begins to expand the family tree of creation. We saw where Adam and Eve gave birth to three sons, the second of which was murdered by his older brother. It was after this death that the Lord blessed the first couple with another son who was named Seth.

This allows the segue to chapter 5 where we find a genealogy bridge constructed from Adam and Eve to Noah. Look again at those words here:

Vv.1-32

Within this passage, we either are reminded of or learn a lot of important things.

First, we see the advent of the word, “mankind”, and its associated meaning.

The scriptures tell us that collectively, the first man and woman, were referred to as “mankind” when God created them in His own likeness. And so when we speak of all mankind, we are simply talking about all males and females together.

The second thing we learn is that Adam was “130 years” old when he and Eve brought Seth into the world. As with other naturally born sons, Seth carried with him the likeness of his father who went onto live another 800 years before he passed away.

This brings us to the third thing we glean from this chapter and that is that people lived a very long time back during the dawn of mankind. In fact, outside of Mahalalel (895), Enoch (365), and Lamech (777), all the men in this list lived more than 900 years. It seems unfathomable to us in today’s culture that this could happen but we need to remember that God’s perfect creation was still very new during its early stages and the environment could have been as such where people lived that long. We need to remember that with God, anything is possible.

From Adam through the procession of kin, the list is pretty standard and consistent. A man had a son when he was a certain number of years old, man then lived more years to his death and had other sons and daughters during that time, and then man died. Then the same items are covered under the son, and then his son, and his, and so on and so forth.

This doesn’t change until we get to Lamech and his son, Noah. For as we see, Lamech had something to say about his boy, the one who would be valued by God and, along with his sons, play an integral part at keeping God’s family tree going after the great flood. Lamech said:

“He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.”

As for Noah, did you know he lived 500 years before he and his wife had any children?

It’s true because the scriptures tell us so as Noah finally was blessed with fatherhood through three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.

It’s fascinating to go back in the Bible to the dawn of mankind and see how different things were, especially in the way of lifespan. Soon we’ll be getting into how Noah did a lot more in his old age than just have children.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
