The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.

So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man.

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Genesis 2:18-24

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

This past December, my wonderful wife, “Amazing” Grace, and I celebrated our 32nd wedding anniversary. That’s a long time to do anything let alone live together with someone every day but I give thanks to God for the gift of marriage. Getting to be with my spouse, who is my best friend outside of Jesus, is a rich gift from God, one that was instituted at the very beginning of creation as we see in today’s passage from our continued study of Genesis, chapter 2. Look again at verses 18 through 24 again here:

Here we find two fundamental truths contained in the marriage covenant.

First, a marriage consists of a man and a woman.

First, we read in this chapter where God created a man, Adam, from the dust and breathed life into him before placing him in Eden’s garden to tend to it (Vv.7-8). Immediately, we see where the Lord was concerned that Adam would suffer from being alone and so He set out to “make a helper suitable for him”. This shows us that God placed importance on relationships. We were never created to live in isolation.

So “the Lord God” started His work to make a suitable helper for Adam. He went about forming “out of the ground” all “the beasts of the field” and “birds of the air”, bringing them to Adam so he could name them. We read where Adam “”gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field” but none of these were a “suitable helper” and so the Lord made sure He provided one.

The scriptures tell us that He went to work to make sure Adam had the right companion and what better way than to have someone he could best relate to…someone who was made much in the way he was. So God placed Adam into a “deep sleep” and conducted the first surgery ever, removing one of the first man’s ribs so to create the first woman, Eve. She became the “perfect suitable mate” for Adam who wasted no time accepting her as the "bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh".

And this leads us to the second fundamental truth, established by God at the very start of creation.

God intended marriage to be between one man and one woman. Period.

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh (v.25)

One man marries one woman and they become one flesh. Anything else outside of this is nothing but sin.

Unfortunately today, the world has completely skewed God’s true intent of male/female relationships, relationships that culminate in marriage. The world, Satan’s domain, wants everyone to believe that any gender can marry the other, men wedded to men and women to women. And to take this to a whole other wicked level, the devil has led people to believe that there are more genders than just male and female, and even if someone is a man or woman by birth, they can declare themselves a female or man respectively, turning the phrase “opposite sex” on its head.

So what’s happening here?

It’s simple. When the world decides to turn from God, then what you end up with is godlessness and a culture where sin is the norm and anything goes. It’s a breeding ground for Satan, the father of lies (John 8:44), to deceive the masses who are primed to be led astray since they have shunned the Lord and His truth.

Frankly, the only way back to where we need to be, to the time in Eden’s garden when God established and ordained marriage as He wanted it, is to get back to basics and holding fast that marriage is only proper when it is one man and one woman coming together to become one flesh. This is the only acceptable form of permanent matrimony, a matrimony that is pleasing in the sight of God and endures until death does the couple part.

This is how marriage was created to be and it’s up to us to maintain and sustain its sanctity as Grace and I do each and every day, rejoicing and giving thanks together for what our God in the very beginning of mankind, creating man and woman to share in the blessing of life together as husband and wife.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
