The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light and there was light. God saw that the light was good and He separated the light from the darkness."

God called the light “day,” and the darkness He called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

Genesis 1:1-5

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

The start of creation as we know it is documented in Genesis, Chapter 1, where we are reminded that “in the beginning”, there was only God. Nothing came before Him as He set forth to create "the heavens and the earth". It’s an amazing feat requiring more power than we can conceive and just stepping back to think about it should leave anyone awestruck.

Now, it’s important to note that the earth wasn’t fully formed at the end of God’s first day of creation. Scripture tells us that it "was formless and empty" and dark. More would come in the ensuing days but God did add light before He finished His work on Day 1, separating it from the darkness. We read where He titled the time of light as “day” while naming the time of darkness, “night”.

As I read about these early stages of creation and meditate on them, I can’t help but draw some parallels to the way God worked to make me a new creation spiritually from the inside, just as He has done and will continue to do in others who come to know and trust Him. For once within me was a dark, formless, empty soul that needed to be crafted and shaped into something useful, something the Lord could use to His glory. And so He entered into the darkness of my inner being and brought light, a divine and holy light that would be the lamp unto my feet and a light to my path as I walked where He wanted me to go. This light always leads me to the place where I find my Father abiding, a place filled with righteousness, mercy, and love. Indeed, thanks be to God for the gift of His wonderful light.

My prayer today, as we once again begin our journey through the Bible, is that you will welcome God inside your soul so that His light might shine from within, reflecting onto all who you encounter. This light is the only one that can overcome inner darkness and lead you to be the kind of created being He wants, a created being that shows others that they are created in His image.

In the beginning, there is God, whether at the dawn of physical creation or at the onset of spiritual birth. Rejoice and be glad in Him today and forever more.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
