The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

I watched as He opened the sixth seal.

There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”

Revelation 6:12-17

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

In yesterday’s message, we saw Jesus break the fifth seal, resulting in Him addressing a multitude of souls who had been persecuted and martyred for standing form for the “Word of God” through “the testimony they had maintained” (v.9). You’ll recall that these souls were yearning for their own resurrection like the believers who Jesus brought to them at the Rapture. They cried out for the Lord’s justice and vengeance to be poured out on the earth but were told that the time had not yet come and they would need to “wait a little longer until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters, were killed just as they had been” (v.11).

And then, Jesus broke the sixth seal and as we see in our passage today, unprecedented chaos ensued that made the four horsemen who had been set loose by the first four seals look mild in comparison. Look again at these closing verses of Revelation, chapter 6:

For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?” Vv.12-17

Imagine being on earth when this will happen.

First a “great earthquake” will take place and don’t minimize this by thinking it will be like the earthquakes the earth had experienced up to that point. For this earthquake would possess the power to literally remove “every mountain and island” from “its place”.

This isn’t some isolated tremor along a particular fault line. Rather, it is a global event that will cause widespread geological displacement and rearrangement. On its own, there would have been enough worldwide calamity but there’s so much more that will happen when Jesus breaks that sixth seal.

For we read where the earth’s population will look up to the heavens and see the following happen:

1. The sun will turn black.

2. The moon will turn blood red.

3. The stars will fall down from the sky

4. The heavens themselves will recede much like a scroll being rolled up.

The scene is beyond our comprehension or imagination. It’s one defined by complete, utter catastrophe and so it’s little wonder why people, no matter their positional or socioeconomic status, will respond when it goes down.

For the scriptures tells us that “the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free” would try and find protective shelter wherever they could, whether “in caves” or “among the rocks of the mountains”. In their distress, they would cry out to be concealed from “the face of Him who sits on the throne”, from “the wrath of the Lamb” for they would know that the long predicted “great day” of the Lord’s “wrath” was upon them and they knew that no one would be able to “withstand it”.

The Book of Revelation is clear that the current heavens and earth will pass away at Jesus’ second coming as He returns to judge the world (Revelation 21:1). Here in chapter six, we see where the birth pains of this future destruction as the Lord puts His unmatched, unrivaled, unlimited power on full display for all the world to see.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
