The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.

Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night, they never stop saying:

“‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.”

Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne and who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being.”

Revelation 4:7-11

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

In the first six verses of Revelation, chapter 4, we found John summoned by Jesus to an open door to Heaven where he witnessed unbelievable beauty and majesty, a beauty and majesty that he did best to put into words. The imagery was incredible as we read a description of God on His throne, a throne that emitted lightning and thunder while being encircled by an emerald rainbow. There were also twenty-four other thrones, each occupied by gold crowned elders in white clothing, and seven lamps sitting on a sea of glass and blazing in front of God, representing His seven spirits.

The scene is simply magnificent beyond anything we can comprehend and as we see in the remainder of this chapter’s verses, Heaven was more than just a place of incomprehensible glory. It was a place of intense, reverent worship.

Look again at our passage for today:

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being.” Revelation 4:7-11

As these verses open, we find that God and the twenty-four elders weren’t alone in the throne room of Heaven. For we read where there were four living creatures, actual angelic entities with distinct characteristics.

Of what purpose did these four creatures serve?

Well, as we can see, they were in full on worship mode, giving glory, honor, and thanks to God, the eternal Creator of all things.

Note here that this worship wasn’t just on some prescribed day and time like we treat worship here on earth in present times. It wasn’t that the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders only entered into bringing admiration and homage to God on Sunday from eleven to twelve. No, the scriptures tell us that the four creatures “never stopped” proclaiming this, doing so “day and night”:

“‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.”

And every time the four creatures did this, praising God and His everlasting holiness, the twenty-four elders would lay down their golden crowns, falling down before their Lord while declaring:

“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things, and by Your will they were created and have their being.”

Brothers and sisters, this is a snapshot of what every Christian can expect one day, leaving this world and all its issues behind to move into the presence of our God forever and participate in Heaven’s worship proclamation perpetually, day and night giving praise to our Maker and Master, without ceasing.

I don’t know about you but I can’t wait. Indeed, through our belief in Christ Jesus, the best is yet to come and the future best will never end. Join me in giving thanks for this blessed assurance, this day and every day forward.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
