The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

Revelation 8:5

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

When Jesus breaks the seventh seal from the scroll He will take from His Father’s right hand, the subsequent judgment will be somewhat delayed. We know because the scriptures tell us so in the opening verse of Revelation, chapter 8.

When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in Heaven for about half an hour.

This moment of silence was the calm before what was to come as we see in verse 5 of this same chapter:

Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

Just prior to this in verses two through four, we read about this angel who had a golden censer as well as seven others who were equipped with trumpets which we will see come into play in the next several messages following today. The angel with the censer was “given incense to offer” and the smoke from that burning incense joined with the prayers of God’s people to rise up to Him, another wonderful scene of worship and devotion to the sovereign Lord as He sat on His throne in Heaven.

It was right after this that we find the judgment of the seventh seal begin to be carried out on the earth. For in verse five, we see the angel taking the golden censer and filling it “with fire from the altar” before hurling the fire down from Heaven and onto the earth.

Now, this wasn’t the first time fire rained down from Heaven to the world below. There were multiple incidents found in the Old Testament such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19), Elijah’s sacrifice on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18), and the elimination of Job’s flocks (Job 1:16) to name a few but we need to note that these were targeted strikes. This firestorm from Heaven was different because it came upon all the earth. All below were subjected to it and the mass devastation it brought. In and of itself, this God-imposed punishment would have been enough but we read where there was even more. For after the firestorm, the scriptures told us the following also came:

1. Flashes of lightning.

2. Peals of thunder and rumblings after the lightning.

3. An earthquake, not the first as we saw where one also occurred when the sixth seal was broken.

All this would have seemed like the final signal that God’s judgment had concluded but as we’re going to see, the signal from the firestorm, lightning, thunder, and earthquake was that this final stage of penalty was just getting started. For next, each of the trumpets will be sounded, sending even more calamity on an earth being pummeled into submission by God’s judgment.

As we’re reading of what’s to come, my prayer is that every Christian believer will be glad to know that they will be rescued by Jesus before the Great Tribulation occurs on the day of Rapture. And if you’re not counted among those who are saved through placing your belief in Jesus as Savior, make today the day of your salvation. Place your trust in Christ and trade in your ticket to an everlasting life in Hell for one that will guarantee your eternal life in Heaven.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
