The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Comfort, comfort My people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.

A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Isaiah 40:1-5

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Today, we hit the pause button on our study of the Great Tribulation and the events triggered by Jesus breaking the seventh seal because we are about to enter the Advent season, a time when we need to prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus, our Savior.

And so we’re going to do just that and I will share a series of messages to carry us day by day until we reach Christmas Day and then we’ll look at a few more events that followed Jesus’ birth that will take us up to New Year’s Day as we usher in 2025.

Before we enter Advent tomorrow, I thought it would be proper for us to have a message leading into what’s to come and examine how our recent Thanksgiving celebration serves to prime us for the much needed, devoted preparation that starts tomorrow. For there could be no better heart attitude for us to carry into the expectation of Jesus’ birth than the attitude of gratitude, remembering fully that this baby wouldn’t be like any other, past or present. For this baby was born to save mankind from the penalty of eternal damnation of Hell and offer the everlasting glory of life in Heaven to all who would simply believe in Him. It’s the ultimate gift of hope, sent from Heaven to earth by a God who didn’t wish for any person to perish so He created a way to deliver them into eternal life (John 3:16).

So as a lead in to the Advent season which starts tomorrow, let’s look at these words from the opening five verses of Isaiah, chapter 40, as God speaks to His beloved Israelites through His prophet:

Comfort, comfort My people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.

A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

The Book of Isaiah is perhaps one of the most amazing books in all the scriptures because the message within is a mirror image of the overall Bible it is a part of. Maybe this is something you know, maybe it’s something new and amazing. Either way, it’s incredible to me, no matter what.

First of all, Isaiah is composed of 66 chapters and there are 66 books in the Bible.

Then, if you read the book in its entirety, you will find that in the first 39 chapters, God speaks out against the stubborn, rebellious attitude of the Israelites and the judgment He would bring as a result of their blatant sinfulness and disrespect towards Him. This is followed in chapters 40 through 66 by His promise to send a saving Messiah who would redeem His people from their sins and bring hope.

How many books do we find in the Old and New Testaments?

39 books in the Old and 27 in the New.

The Old Testament is predicated on the old covenant grounded in compliance with the Mosaic Law, a law that exposed the sins of the people of Israel and showed that no one could gain salvation on their own merit. The New is grounded in God’s salvation offer to all people, Jew or Gentile, who would simply believe in His Son Jesus as their Savior and the Lamb of God who was a willing atoning sacrifice which took away the sin of the world (John 1:29).

With all this, we shouldn’t be surprised by the tone of the opening five verses of Isaiah 40 as God begins to bring the good news of Jesus’ coming to them. Just as His words sought to comfort His people in the midst of their circumstances about 2,700 years ago through the prophet Isaiah, He speaks consolation and solace to us today. For in a mere 25 days, we will celebrate what God said was coming, a baby born to die a death He didn’t deserve to save a people who didn’t do anything to deserve saving.

As we prepare for Jesus’ birth, let us use the spirit of thanksgiving, cultivated by the recently passed holiday, and apply it to our hearts anew as we prepare the way of our lives to receive the Lord Jesus, readying ourselves to celebrate His birth and then carry on His Gospel work in the year to come.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

Revelation 8:5

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

When Jesus breaks the seventh seal from the scroll He will take from His Father’s right hand, the subsequent judgment will be somewhat delayed. We know because the scriptures tell us so in the opening verse of Revelation, chapter 8.

When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in Heaven for about half an hour.

This moment of silence was the calm before what was to come as we see in verse 5 of this same chapter:

Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

Just prior to this in verses two through four, we read about this angel who had a golden censer as well as seven others who were equipped with trumpets which we will see come into play in the next several messages following today. The angel with the censer was “given incense to offer” and the smoke from that burning incense joined with the prayers of God’s people to rise up to Him, another wonderful scene of worship and devotion to the sovereign Lord as He sat on His throne in Heaven.

It was right after this that we find the judgment of the seventh seal begin to be carried out on the earth. For in verse five, we see the angel taking the golden censer and filling it “with fire from the altar” before hurling the fire down from Heaven and onto the earth.

Now, this wasn’t the first time fire rained down from Heaven to the world below. There were multiple incidents found in the Old Testament such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19), Elijah’s sacrifice on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18), and the elimination of Job’s flocks (Job 1:16) to name a few but we need to note that these were targeted strikes. This firestorm from Heaven was different because it came upon all the earth. All below were subjected to it and the mass devastation it brought. In and of itself, this God-imposed punishment would have been enough but we read where there was even more. For after the firestorm, the scriptures told us the following also came:

1. Flashes of lightning.

2. Peals of thunder and rumblings after the lightning.

3. An earthquake, not the first as we saw where one also occurred when the sixth seal was broken.

All this would have seemed like the final signal that God’s judgment had concluded but as we’re going to see, the signal from the firestorm, lightning, thunder, and earthquake was that this final stage of penalty was just getting started. For next, each of the trumpets will be sounded, sending even more calamity on an earth being pummeled into submission by God’s judgment.

As we’re reading of what’s to come, my prayer is that every Christian believer will be glad to know that they will be rescued by Jesus before the Great Tribulation occurs on the day of Rapture. And if you’re not counted among those who are saved through placing your belief in Jesus as Savior, make today the day of your salvation. Place your trust in Christ and trade in your ticket to an everlasting life in Hell for one that will guarantee your eternal life in Heaven.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

Anyone who knows me will understand why I might have a fixation with acronyms. After all, twenty eight and a half years of serving in the Navy will expose you to more than a few.

Given this, I’ve been called by the Holy Spirit to write this devotion based on an acronym of the word “thanks”. Each letter of the word will offer a reason to have gratitude toward our Lord, not only during this holiday season but every day. Let’s get started with the letter “T” and move through every letter thereafter, looking at verses from the Word of God that encourage us to adopt an attitude of gratitude.

T = TRUSTWORTHINESS

Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy. 2 Samuel 7:28

The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. Psalm 19:7

The Lord is trustworthy in all He promises and faithful in all He does. Psalm 145:13

How many people have let you down in your life when you trusted them?

I don’t know about you but I lost count a long time ago.

This is why it’s so critical to have a relationship with the One who never fails His children. Ever.

We find Samuel proclaiming the trustworthiness of our sovereign God, understanding that the Lord’s covenant is one that can be relied on. David, the master psalmist, is in agreement with Samuel because indeed, the Lord never breaks His promises and He has made many of them in the scriptures. One need only read their Bible to see that.

King David also talks of how we, the simple, can expect to gain wisdom when we choose to follow the Lord’s guidance and direction because both are grounded in trustworthiness. The Lord has never and will never lead His people astray when they rely on Him, and we can put our faith in this truth.

Finally, we read from David’s words that the Lord is faithful in all He does. Note that David doesn’t say that the Lord is faithful in most of the things He does. No, our Lord is faithful in ALL He does. We can always have faith and trust in Him because He and He alone is perfectly faithful and trustworthy.

H = HOPEFULNESS

God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish. Psalm 9:18

You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds, God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas. Psalm 65:5

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him. Psalm 62:5

Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. Psalm 146:5

Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31

I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in Him, to the one who seeks Him. Lamentations 3:25

Everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. Romans 15:4

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3

As you can see, there are many scriptures that speak to the reassurance and hope we have in our Lord. In fact, hope is what buoys us up and keeps us afloat in a life where the world seems to want to drag us below the surface to drown in our circumstances.

For the afflicted, the scriptures assure us that their hope will never perish. This is because the Lord Himself will never perish. As long as we have the Lord, we have hope, a hope no one else can provide.

When we’re in the midst of weakness, the prophet Isaiah reminds us that all we need to do is hope in the Lord so that our strength might be renewed. His hope alone can help the feeble soar on wings like eagles.

For those who are troubled in life, the scriptures offer assurance that through the Lord’s hope, their souls can find rest, peace, encouragement, and even joy. The scriptures breed perseverance within us as we read about the trustworthy promises of our God. Indeed, the Lord IS good to those who seek Him and place their hope in His hands.

And for those of us who are struggling to make sense of our life and where it might be heading, the Lord speaks words of hope into our hearts and minds. Through the prophet Jeremiah, He promises that He knows the plans He has for us. All we need to do is trust Him and why wouldn’t we want to do that because He wants us to prosper, be free from harm, and have a hope for our future.

Finally, the primary instrument of our promised “future hope” is Jesus Christ, God’s only Son who He sent to give us a new birth into a living hope, one that assures all Christ-followers that they will overcome death and the grave when this life ends, joining God and Jesus forever. Through the hope found in Jesus, the final chapter of your life’s story has already been written and it’s the happiest ending ever. All you have to do is place your hope and trust in Him as Savior, given to save you from the penalty of Hell by a loving, trustworthy God.

A = ABUNDANCE

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom. One generation commends Your works to another; they tell of Your mighty acts. They speak of the glorious splendor of Your majesty—and I will meditate on Your wonderful works. They tell of the power of Your awesome works—and I will proclaim Your great deeds. They celebrate Your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of Your righteousness. Psalm 145:3-7

How abundant are the good things that You have stored up for those who fear You, that You bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in You. Psalm 31:19

God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8

Think about where we are today in the scope of the dawn of mankind. We are countless generations from the first couple, Adam and Eve, and yet, we still live and learn and love, and do so abundantly because of a Lord who provides.

God is good. We hear people proclaim it all the time here in the 21st century but it’s definitely not a modern day expression. Rather, it has been proclaimed for the ages as people experience the remarkable, amazing, copious goodness of God first-hand. Indeed, His power, majesty, and glory are always on display. All we need to do is open our eyes and take in the creation around us for only an omnipotent Creator could craft the abundant nature of what we see and experience in our world.

Going back to the Psalms, we find David proclaiming that the Lord has good things stored up for those who revere and respect Him. The apostle Paul shares this sentiment asserting that God always looks out for the good of those who love Him, those called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). So trust the Lord, place Your hope in Him, and an abundance of goodness will be yours. He will bless you plentifully so you will have all you need to abound in the works He calls you to do, and that is definitely reason to give thanks.

N = NEWNESS

If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17

We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Romans 6:4

I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. The one who is victorious I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them My new name. Revelation 5:11-12

I often think about my life before Jesus. It wasn’t pretty.

Like so many others, past and present, I thought I could captain my own vessel and navigate through life successfully. What I learned is the more I was holding onto my will and way, the more I was completely lousing things up and running aground. Something needed changing and I needed newness.

Enter Christ Jesus who brought the words of Paul to life in me, making me a new creation from the moment I asked Him into my life and accepted Him as my personal Savior. In a moment, the former me was in the past and I was now embarking on an exciting journey that I’m still on this very day, a journey that is not just for the now but forever. Once dead in my sin, I was now assured of life, a resurrection life that would allow me to be with Jesus and His Father God eternally. Jesus wrote on me a new name, one that would mark me as His, a future resident of the new Jerusalem that will come down from the new heavens and be found on the new earth when Christ returns (Revelation 21:1-2).

Let us give thanks for the newness we find in our Lord.

K = KNOWLEDGE

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Proverbs 1:7

The Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6

Ask God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God. Colossians 1:9-10

Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 3:18

Where would we be without the Bible and God’s breathed out, inspired words within (2 Timothy 3:16-17)?

Well, for starters, we would be left to a life of ignorance and foolishness, a life void of wisdom.

I give thanks that I can learn something new and fresh, every time I read my Bible, even from passages I may have read many times before. It’s amazingly awesome to me that the Lord always brings new levels of understanding to me. Maybe you can relate.

The great news is that this Holy Word of the Lord is available to anyone who would want it. A person can choose to receive or reject it and those who turn away from it, do so because they lack any kind of respect or reverence for their Master and Maker, the Author of the Word. Therefore, knowledge never really gets started with them for only from the Lord’s mouth do we receive legitimate understanding and wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-6).

We need to receive this offering of divine knowledge with gratitude because it helps us bear good fruits in our life, a life that is worthy of the Lord and pleasing to Him in every way. And it’s this kind of life that leads us to a spirit of everlasting thanksgiving unto the Lord who imparts all we need to know about Him and the plan He has for each of us, a plan that leads to the final letter and its representative word.

S = SALVATION

Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:11-12

For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 5:9

Mankind has received no greater gift from God than His Son Jesus. Anything else pales in comparison and even gifts we might mention as runner ups are all connected to what we have because of Jesus. Every good and perfect thing is in and of Him.

Indeed, God made a trustworthy promise when He loved the world so much that He was willing to offer up Christ Jesus, His only Son, so no person would perish but rather have the opportunity to live forever (John 3:16). The fulfillment of that promise is what offers us newness in Jesus and an abundant hope that no one can take away. We have this knowledge because God provided it through the scriptures.

Yes, we end this T.H.A.N.K.S. acronym message with salvation, the promise of living forever through Jesus, because God always saves the best for last and I pray that we all will put it at the top of our list of things to be grateful for, not just on Thanksgiving, but every day of every month of every year that the Lord provides in this life until He ushers us into the one to come.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone and blessings to you always!

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in Heaven for about half an hour.

And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.

Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand.

Revelation 8:1-4

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

In Revelation, chapter 7, we find a series of happenings that occur in a brief interlude between the breaking of the sixth and seventh seals by Jesus on the scroll He took from the right hand of His Father God. You’ll recall that the sixth seal touched off cataclysmic events that shook both the earth and the heavens, and as we’re going to see in chapter 8, the severing of the seventh seal is going to add even more judgment but not before a moment of calm. Let’s look again at the first four verses of this chapter:

When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in Heaven for about half an hour.

And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.

Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand.

Perhaps, there was an expectation within the throne room of God that the breaking of the final seal on the scroll would unleash some form of immediate fury but as we see, there was nothing but silence for about 30 minutes, a calm before the firestorm that we will see unleashed in tomorrow’s message but before we get there, we find peace and an issuing of trumpets to seven angels who were standing before God.

More on what these angel-blowing trumpets will bring later but before we get there, we read where there was “another angel” in the throne room who “had a golden censer”, a container used to burn incense. This angel approached and stood at the “golden altar in front of the throne” and the scriptures tell us that the “smoke of the incense” along “with the prayers of God’s people” rose up “before God from the angel’s hand”. Together, they represented the petitions and praises lifted up from the people to their divine and holy Lord.

And thus ends the peaceful, reverent period of devotion that was kicked off with the breaking of the seventh seal. For as we’ll see, the series of events that come next will make the prior six seal-breaking judgments look like child’s play as the Great Tribulation reaches its climax.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

WASHED WHITE BY THE BLOOD?

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”

I answered, “Sir, you know.”

And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore,

“they are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will shelter them with His presence. Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’ nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their Shepherd; ‘He will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”

Revelation 7:13-17

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Have you ever had a cut, laceration, or abrasion and it ended up bleeding onto your clothing?

I know I have and whenever it happens, there is always a concern that the stain won’t come out. Such is the nature of blood when it comes into contact with any kind of absorbent cloth. In fact, if you do a little research on the subject of clothing stains, you will find blood right up there with tomato sauce, ketchup, and permanent markers.

So given this, it would be counterintuitive for anyone to think that blood might actually clean someone vice stain them but that’s exactly the analogy we find when we look at today’s passage from the final verses of Revelation, chapter 7. There, we find John sharing this:

Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”

I answered, “Sir, you know.”

And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore,

“they are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will shelter them with His presence. Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’ nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their Shepherd; ‘He will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’” Vv.13-17

You may recall that this chapter begins with a sealing (or protecting) of 144,000 servants of the Lord Most High, twelve thousand from each of the twelve tribes of Israel, who were commissioned to continue to spread the Gospel during the Great Tribulation period. Their work would produce so many new Christian believers that the scriptures tell us they were uncountable. All were dressed in white robes and holding palm branches in their hand as they waited for their time of resurrection to come.

This introduction to this multitude of new Jesus followers is picked back up on as we get to verses 13 through 17 which begin with one of the twenty four elders in the throne room of God asking John a question he already knew the answer to:

“These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?”

Then, responding to his own question, the elder tells John:

“These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

Note here how the newly saved Christians had “come out of the great tribulation” and their robes were white because they had been “washed...in the blood of the Lamb” who we know is Jesus.

This special spiritual cleansing that defies mere human convention is affirmed from as far back as the times of the Old Testament prophet Isaiah where we find the Lord saying this:

“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” v.18

And then in John’s first of three letters found in the New Testament, we find this:

...if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin. 1:7 NLT

Cleansed by the blood of Jesus.

This is what happens to everyone who places their belief and faith and Him as Lord and Savior. He, Jesus, justifies the Christian believer so that they are made just as if they had never sinned, the dirty stains of sin washed away by the blood of the Lamb., leaving the transgressor white as snow as they then await what is to come while enjoying the privilege and honor of being in God’s throne room. There, they will “serve Him day and night in His temple” while He shelters “them in His presence”, ensuring that they will never hunger or thirst again. Led by Jesus, their Good Shepherd, they will enjoy the “springs of living water” and experience the comfort and love of God who “will wipe every tear from their eyes”.

After the Rapture, we know that bad times are coming to earth as Jesus breaks each of the seven seals on the scroll taken from His Father’s right hand. But in between seals six and seven, we have seen how there are some positives that will happen, despite the great tribulation and the judgment it brings. For even in the midst of administering His punishment, God still shows how He is a God of mercy and grace and forgiveness, extending salvation to anyone who would trust in His Son as Savior.

Let us give thanks and rejoice in this truth each and every day.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying:

“Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God forever and ever. Amen!”

Revelation 7:11-12

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

All creation is ruled over by a supreme, sovereign God who is the Maker and Master of all things. He is all powerful (omnipotent), all knowing (omniscient), and present everywhere (omnipresent). He has no rival or equal and He is the Author of salvation for anyone who would simply believe in His Son Jesus who He established as the only Savior. And with all this, only He and Jesus are worthy of our worship.

How do we properly show our admiration to such a God as Him?

We find seven elements to incorporate in today’s passage from our continuing study of Revelation, chapter 7. Look again at these words here:

All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying:

“Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God forever and ever. Amen!” Vv.11-12

First of all, we need to see where all the angels who “were standing around the throne”, “the elders”, and the “four living creatures” had fallen “down on their faces before the throne” in a spirit of reverent worship unto God. As a collective whole they proclaimed, “Amen!” which showed immediately that they were in full agreement with one another as to what was declared next, the seven elements of admiration that any believer should extend to the Lord. These included an extension of the following:

1. Praise.

By definition, praise is an expression of approval and commendation toward God. No one is worthy of all of our praise but Him. David put it this way in the first three verses of the 145th Psalm:

I will exalt You, my God the King; I will praise Your name forever and ever. Every day, I will praise You and extol Your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom.

2. Glory.

What is glory?

It’s extending distinction or renown with a common consent.

The angels were elevating God to the highest level of their devotion and tribute. They acknowledged that there is no one like the Lord and that He is to be distinguished and elevated in recognition above all things in Heaven or on earth.

3. Wisdom.

No one possesses the wisdom that God holds. In fact, He is the source of all wisdom so if anyone is truly wise, they only are so because God has imparted the wisdom upon them. The angels were affirming this truth through their worship.

4. Thanks.

Consider all that God has done for you in life, carefully counting your blessings, and I am sure that you will see where it’s easy to come to a place of thanksgiving when coming before the Lord with heartfelt admiration over all He has done, all He is doing, and all He is yet to do.

5. Honor.

To honor someone is to give them special recognition and high respect. No one deserves this more than the Lord God Almighty and just in case we don’t get this naturally, He actually commands us to honor Him as we see by His own words:

“Those who honor Me I will honor, but those who despise Me will be disdained.” 1 Samuel 2:30

No one should want to find themselves on God’s bad side...ever. He demands honor and no one should deny Him what He deserves. If they do, they do it at their own peril.

6. Power.

As mentioned prior, God is omnipotent and unrivaled in the magnitude of His might. No one can stand against Him and this is the God who promises He is with and for those who place their belief and trust in Him. This assurance should not only bring us comfort and peace but also to a place of praise and thanksgiving for surely if God is for us, who can stand against us (Romans 8:31)?

7. Strength.

A byproduct of God’s infinitesimal power is His unmatched, unfailing strength. This means He never tires or wanes unlike we humans. In fact, He actually can infuse His strength inside us in our times of weariness. We are told this in the closing verses of Isaiah, chapter 40:

Do you not know? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Vv.28-31

The angels knew and proclaimed all these attributes of admiration toward the Almighty God of all creation, seven in total and we know the number seven represents perfection in the scriptures and so we end up with perfect worship and reverence for a perfect God through a set of perfect elements.

Let’s all join with the angels and follow their lead, joining with them in saying, “Amen!”

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

Revelation 7:10

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

I think I can safely say that most people of the world hold onto a hope for Heaven when this life is over both for themselves and their loved ones. This is supported by a 2023 survey done by the Gallup International which found that nearly 60 percent of responders believe that Heaven exists.

Given this, you might think this percentage represents good news. After all, it is close to two-thirds of the surveyed global population.

But it’s one thing to believe Heaven exists and another to actually know how to get there. Therein is the rub when we’re talking about this subject for there are a multitude of people who think they are good people, or see their beloved people as good, and think that’s the chief qualifier to enter into eternal life. And with a hold on this mindset, we see how easily Satan has deceived human beings to sense that they can somehow earn a right to the Kingdom of God through their own merit.

Obviously, these people haven’t given consideration to the Bible, the very compilation of God-breathed words that set what is true and expose all falsehood.

Here’s a good place for anyone to start, two verses that quickly let a person know where they stand when it comes to gaining Heaven minus any kind of divine intervention:

“...all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

God despises sin and has shown that He will bring destruction on anyplace or anyone who chooses to commit in His sight...and He sees everything. If you doubt this, look up what happened to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and their populations (Genesis 19). The Lord utterly annihilated them, sending burning sulfur from Heaven to earth.

And so every single person is in a bad place. They are inherently sinful before a God who brings consequences to sinners, consequences that can be deadly.

Given this, the two-thirds of the people who believe in Heaven also need to know what they need to believe in order to get there. Thankfully, the Word of God makes this simple and let’s begin by our scripture verse today, verse 10 of Revelation, chapter 7:

And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

Who were the “they” mentioned in this passage?

We looked at the answer in yesterday’s message as a multitude of saved people, a number so vast that it couldn’t be counted, entered into John’s sight. We read where they were from “every nation, tribe, people and language” and were clothed in “white robes” and “holding palm branches in their hands”. It was this body of new Christ believers who “cried out in a loud voice”:

“Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

The scriptures are clear. God is the only One which holds the key to Heaven and the only One who can use that key to open the door to everlasting life is Jesus. Returning to the Bible for affirmation of this, we find these verses:

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

Jesus answered, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6

Here, we find that God has made the way for Jesus to be the only source of salvation. In other words, no one can come to the Father in Heaven except through the Son.

God, out of His incredible love and grace and mercy, loved the world and its people so much that He didn’t wish for them to perish in their sinfulness. And so given that there was a blood sacrifice needed to atone for the sins of all mankind, once and for all, God offered up His Son Jesus, the Lamb of God, who was crucified on the cross of Calvary so that anyone who would believe in Him would be justified or made as if they had never sinned. They would be covered by the shed blood of the Lamb Jesus, washed clean and set for a life forever with God. He is the only One who can bring someone to the Father and the Father dwells in Heaven.

So...anyone who believes in Heaven and wishes to live there eternally, escaping the everlasting darkness and torment of Hell in the process, must believe in Jesus as Savior, trusting in their hearts that God raised Him from the dead...and one day will do the same for them.

It’s really that simple for He and He alone is the only source of salvation, all made possible by our God who “sits on the throne”.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark

The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.

Revelation 7:9

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

In the time between the utter chaos set forth in the heavens and the earth after Jesus breaks the sixth of seven seals on the scroll taken from God’s right hand, we saw in yesterday’s message where 144,000 descendants from the tribes of Jacob – 12,000 from each of the twelve tribes – were marked and sealed by the Lord’s protection so to go forth and bring the Gospel to those in the midst of the Great Tribulation. As we look at chapter 7 and verse 9 of the Book of Revelation, we read about the incredible return on investment that this special sealing produced. Look again at those words here:

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.

These words shared by John reveal the unbelievable success of the Gospel work of the 144,000 servants of Jesus. For the “great multitude” of saved people, "wearing white robes" and "holding palm branches in their hands", was seen by John, a large number such that “no one could count” it.

Think about that for a moment for this is after the Rapture where Jesus takes away all His disciples, whether dead or alive, to rescue them from the Tribulation. To begin putting the magnitude of that even into perspective, we know that there are approximately two billion Christians alive on earth today, roughly one fourth of the total global population. That’s a lot of people suddenly being taken from the earth at one time and when we add all the dead in Christ, we can see where it’s a monumental event unlike anything the world would have even seen.

And that’s before this immeasurable multitude of saved sinners that John writes about, an immeasurable multitude created by the Gospel mission work of the 144,000 sealed servants.

It’s nothing less than an astonishing display of God’s continuing grace, mercy, forgiveness, and love, that He would still be opening up the door of Heaven to those who had rejected His Son but then had a change of heart and turned to Him for salvation.

As we’re going to see in tomorrow’s message, the Lord’s goodness is not going to go unnoticed or taken for granted for worship is about to happen, a celebration of the saving power of the Lord, and we’ll get to read all about it as John shares what he saw.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
