The scriptures. May God bless the reading of His holy word.

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Colossians 3:17

This ends this reading from God's holy word. Thanks be to God.

Today, we finish this series on life resolutions found in God’s word within Paul’s letter to the Christians in Colossae. Before we look at resolution number 10, here’s the nine that have come before it:

Resolution #1: Set your heart on things above.

Resolution #2: Put to death your earthly nature.

Resolution #3: Clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and

                        patience.

Resolution #4: Bear with each other and forgive as the Lord has forgiven you.

Resolution #5: Put on love and bond with others in unity.

Resolution #6: Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart.

Resolution #7: Be thankful.

Resolution #8: Let the message of Christ dwell in you.

Resolution #9:  Devote yourself to prayer.

If you have missed any of these previous messages, I encourage you to go back and read the words the Lord has provided in support of His commands.

And this brings us to the tenth and final resolution we glean from chapter 3 and the first verses of chapter 4. It is:

RESOLUTION #10: Do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the Father through Him.

Friends, this is a basic, fundamental command to be a Christian by living as Jesus did in every way, by honoring and paying tribute to Him by doing everything in His name. Note that there is no gray area or exception here. As Christ believers, we are to do everything in the name of Jesus, all the while giving thanks to God for the incredible gift of salvation and eternal life we gain through the Son that He gave freely to pay the price for our sins.

This call to action seems simple enough and yet, there couldn’t be a more challenging resolution for us to carry out in such a sin-filled world, a world where we are part and parcel as sinners. Without question, it is a harrowing undertaking to do everything in the name of Jesus, and in fact, Satan would whisper in our ear that it’s impossible. Maybe he is doing that right now, sowing seeds of doubt in our minds.

So what would Jesus do in response to that?

He would proclaim, “Get behind me Satan!”, knowing the enemy has no power over Him, just as He has no power over anyone who does everything in word and deed in the name of Jesus. Paul said in the fourth chapter of his letter to the Philippians that he could do all things through Christ who gave him strength (v. 13) and so can we through the power of Jesus within us.

For with Christ dwelling within us, we truly will be able to do everything, whether in word or deed, in His name as long as we submit to His leading and guidance. And that kind of life will always be one that is pleasing in the sight of God the Father.

And so there you have it. Ten life resolutions from God’s word for us to adopt and there isn’t one of them that is unattainable as long as we choose to place our life’s attention and heart’s affection on Christ and Christ alone.

Amen.

In Christ,

Mark
